A15 questions

I finally got one of my spare A15 motors up on the stand and have started disassembling it.

I was expecting to see the big "A15" cast on the side of the block but it wasn't there.

Instead there's a flat spot kinda behind the distributor and "A15" is punched(?) or engraved on it.

Another flat spot has a serial number.

Is that what they did earlier before the model was cast on the side of the block?

The cam looks to have "H50" near one end, is that stock? I read on the WiKi that was what the 1200's had.

It had an H95 head, seems to have smaller oval intake ports?

I intend to bolt on my H89 with the dual SU's.

This engine is in much better condition than the one I'm currently using so I'll put in new rings and bearings and put it in the car.

It was running before pulled, and it didn't smoke - I drove the car it came out of.

What else should I check before I button it up? There weren't any oil or other fluid leaks.

Oh, gotta have a picture I guess!

Any thoughts on that discoloration by #4?

So I caught a bad cold and just got back to this engine after mostly recovering.

I pulled the pistons, they slid right out without having to be pounded with a stick or any of that kind of force - I had to push them with my hand but otherwise they didn't give a lot of resistance.

The bearings hardly look worn at all.

I'm wondering if this motor may have been rebuilt recently, there's no gunk inside anywhere.

New bearings and rings and button it up with the new gaskets and slip it into my car and go.

Stock build with my H89 and a pair of SU HIF4 carbs along with that dogleg 5 speed and I'll be a very happy driver in my little 1500 pound car!

OK, I will jump in. The casting marks or lack of an A!5 cast into the block, both the later A14 and A15 used the same blocks that's why stamping the engine size easier and cheaper and depending on what part of the world a Datsun 210 came from it might of had an A12A.

The 1200 cams have one gear and fuel pump eccentric, the oil pump and distributor share the same gear, where the A14-15 have two gears as the new block design moved the distributor back towards the starter. The casting marks 180 and H50 seems to show up in either case.

H95 cylinder head was design for emissions and fuel economy. I like your choice of using an H89 cylinder head as the short side radius has VERY good flow to the intake valves, great mid range and not giving up much in the higher rpm's. I had 40mm intake and 33mm exhaust valves installed in my H89, ported and .003 take off the surface- to make sure it was straight. The machinist that did the work on the head used a flow bench, liked the H89 head over Nissan GX heads because of the flow over a wider range of rpm's

I own a few English cars, the A15 won't leak oil like were used to! I would change the front and rear seals on the crankshaft for sure.

Discoloration on #4, not getting the oil splashed on it as much, front sump engine, probably why the others look cleaner.

Nissan casted their engine blocks with a lot of nickle in them, the rings tend to wear more then the cylinders because of it!

It may have been rebuilt- it does look very clean.

You may consider a more aggressive camshaft, Delta in Tacoma has about 10 different profiles to choose from, however I am guessing you are running stock rear axle? and BMC axle shafts are not up to sudden shocks of torque, tend to break on the flange end. Dual carbs-good fun, exhaust header?? AutoX car, maybe?

Thanks Morrisun,

Hey I was just down in your area last weekend, driving my brown 4 door 210 around the place!

Yes maybe someday I'll put in a hotter cam but like you say the rear axles are a known issue on these cars.

I've seen my share of broken and twisted axle splines on other people's cars.

The A15 with the H89 and a pair of 1.5" side draft carbs puts out enough to keep me happy in my Midget.

After I get rid of the steel bonnet and install fiberglass and do a few other weight reducing operations it will be even better.

This one has the 60 series dogleg 5 speed from a 79 210 and the 3.7 rear diff making it a great highway cruiser.
