Remember the engine turns clockwise, viewed from the front.  Get a wrench, that fits the bolt on the crank pulley.

Put the wrench closed end on the crank pulley nut, and on a crossmember or something solid in the front of the engine compartment.

MAKE SURE THE WRENCH IS SET TO NOT MOVE, WHEN THE ENGINE TURNS CLOCKWISE!

Bump the starter.

Another method is to put the car in fourth gear, and set the emergency brake hard.  That might hold the engine from turning.

Kinda related hope you don't mind me throwing this question out OP, anyone have a suggestion for getting one loose while on an engine stand with no head?

Take a couple of bolts, stick them into the other end of the crank then use a pry bar to keep the crank from turning as you loosen the pulley bolt.
