Hey all, there's someone near me that is parting out a 280z. Datsun 1977 280z parting out on Kijiji http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-auto-parts-tires-engine-engine-parts-Datsun-1977-280z-parting-out-W0QQAdIdZ1018769169

My question is can I use / upgrade any of these parts on my 78 620? Also , was it standard for the 78s to have front disc brakes or was it optional ? My 78 has drums all around

If you have drum brakes on the front it can't be a '78, simple as that. Check your build date on the door jam tag. August '77 and on were '78 model year trucks. All '78s had first year disc brakes, EI (electronic ignition) distributors, internally regulated alternators, ball joint steering, W-58 heads, 13/16 master cylinder change.

http://toronto.kijij...AdIdZ1018769169 nothing here that would fit a 620.

Sometimes the selling date is used, well it did happen back then.

Beware, the 620 looked the same from late '72 through '79. Wouldn't be a stretch to put a '79 door and engine room tag on a '73 and call it a '79. No harm to you unless stolen. I see no problem continuing on if this is the case. Selling it knowing it's wrong .... might be  problem later.

Door and engine tags can easily be swapped to a '77 body that had drum brakes. The emission sticker even says the '77 model year.

The vehicle number beginning Jan 1st '78 was 310,001 to June '78 (the end of the '78 model year) was 375,000 so you number 314,996 fits perfectly

If you really want to know, wire brush the rust off the top of the passenger frame top just forward of the engine mount and behind the alternator. The matching vehicle number is stamped there.  An August '76 to July '77 ('77 model year run will have a vehicle number of between 158,751 to 260,000. Hell, it might be even older than that. Post a picture of your engine bay showing the rad support.

The '78 620 had front disc brakes not drum.

HL620 makes it a '75 or newer, drum brakes makes it a '77 or older.

August  '76 to August '77 frame numbers.... 156762 to 260000

188822... is right in the middle.

So looks like a '77 frame and '78 body? or registration. I wouldn't worry unless the frame is stolen. It could possibly be taken back?

Does it make a difference if it's "khl620" or "hl620"? In the picture the "k" is cut off by the shadow. So to recap, the number 188822 makes this a 77' frame?

KHL 620 makes it a King Cab long wheelbase frame.

HL 620 is a regular cab and can be long or short wheelbaswe.

The number 188822 falls within the '77 model year production.

The frame is the governing criteria for what the truck is and what year. You have ownership of a '78 truck but if pressed you cannot show a matching frame number. This is illegal and illegal to sell knowingly or otherwise. I would say that it is very unlikely anyone will ask you to prove what you have but you could get into hot water if you sell it. What if the frame was from a stolen truck?????  If you are keeping it there is a risk.

Can you run the frame number and see if there is a problem with it. Forget Carfax it's pre '82.

Iffin I was a gamblin man... I would say you have a 77 that someone put on a 78 cab. Could be it was damaged badly and it was easier to change out the cab. Nowdays it would have been retitled as a salvage title...Back then there werent salvage titles...A lot of totalled vehicles were repaired and sold without the new owner knowing of the salvage condition.
