drained battery killed alternator?

let me preface this by saying I am not poitive this alternator was good upon install or that it is internally regulated. I got the alternator in a parts pile i bought years ago and it looked good. it looks larger than the one that I pulled out of my 521, I think it is a 620 alt. I checked the back and it had the letters that an external reg alt have so I think teh voltage reg is used.

so, I left my key on and went a fucked off for a couple hours. Came back and battery is dead. jumped it. when I took the jumpers off it died instantly. let it idle for five min with the jumpers on. took jumpers off it ran for five seconds and then died.

Did my alt die?

was it never good and I've been running on battery this whole time?

Not sure, but it sounds like the alternator is shot. Take the alternator off and bring it to a parts store and have it bench tested. Heck, may as well have the them charge and test the battery as well. Both should be free services.
