Is Pertronix 1741 a bolt and play with my distributor or is there mods I need to know? My coil is 1.5 ohm and I'm assuming my resistor is about the same? Do I need a need coil for this conversion? I have been searching and reading my ass off. One solid convincing answer on what I should do would be great so I know what it is I need to get. Thanks guys!!

There is no one answer.

Yes it will be the right unit and should be direct bolt on even if you use a stock resistor... I do

But:

If your distributor has a ring around the shaft directly under rotor ,, you will have to have that turned down in order for pick-up to slide all the way on.. Some have it others don't,, good thing though it's a cheap 10 minute machine shop service.

The Pertronix unit basically replaces the points. It rids you of having to replace, file or gap points. I don't know how much power the solid state Pertronix unit can handle so for now run your stock coil and ballast resistor. Hainz will know if you can safely use a lower resistance coil or not. Do NOT run the stock coil without the ballast as it will draw way too much current and fry itself.

The Matchbox or the earlier remote igniter EI distributors are best. They do not draw power through the coil if you leave your ignition on. They have a larger cap with more space between wires which is better for handling the higher voltage output. They can handle huge amounts of power without problems so a lower resistance coil that draws more power can be used for higher output voltage. The lower resistance EI coil is built to safely handle the extra current. The stock coil is not and needs a ballast resistor.

You can use any EI coil with your matchbox and do not have to spend a lot on some after market one. After market just charge you more for the red shiny paint.

Thanks guys for all the help, I'm going to look into a Matchbox and see what I can find. I'm intrigued by the Pertronix, also. Trying to figure out how to add a picture of my distributor for y'all to look at, but this iPad is kicking my butt. Pretty sure mine has that small nub I need to machine off if I go the Pertronix route.

when using a Petronix just use the stock stuff. Coil and ballast.

all the L20 distributor the Ring above the point love must be machined down. I had a guy at work do mine. I have it as a spare with the dizzy.

However I did have 1 dizzy the pertronix would not fit out of all the spare dizzys I had set up.

if buying a Matchbox dizzy there were 2 types . One will fit your mount the other it might not as the pedestal used the lockdown tab that sticks out is located a few degress off.

What one you get at O rileys or Autozone could be any guess when it shows up

go to a Datsun gathing and people can help you.

No its not quite plug and play.

The EZest is the single point L16 dizzy or the SSS dizzy and some L18s and even some Mitshibishi dizzys( I had one of these converted also) bushing just worn out

So I ordered the Cardone Remanufactured - Electronic Ignition Distributor from Orileys today. Anyone used theirs yet and have any remarks? I'm going to save my old distrib and clean it up for spare. Also again about the stock coil and ballast, use those with this new distrib?

No,if you bought a matchbox distributor i think you need the right coil to go with it.

You can use the points coil only if you use the points ballast resister that goes with it. It will work just fine but you will only have a breakerless ignition and not the high output voltage of the EI coil. Order a '79 200sx coil and this will do. With it you don't need the ballast resister.
