difrangia
Hello all, I need some information from the gurus on the mid 60’s Datsun transmission/clutch setups. I’ll be pulling the engine/trany out of the 320 pickup in the next month or so for a re-build and a change from 4-speed column to 4-speed floor shift. I’m trying to round up the last pieces in the clutch area that I’ll need to sew up the trany to the E1 engine. I have the trany and correct floor pan for the switch-over but am short the throwout bearing sleeve or carrier, the proper flywheel, and a pressure plate. I’ve been studying parts manuals for the 1964-65 area cars and trucks and have kinda formed up that the trany was used in the 1965 320 pickup (maybe late 64), and the 410 sedan and 520 pickup up to about September 1965. Here are a few photos of the transmission. The gear ratios may be different between the sedan and pickup but from what I can determine, the main outward difference is that the rectangular boss in the lower middle of the tailshaft was machined and tapped on the sides for the rear mounts on a 320 and on the bottom of the boss for the 410 & 520. The input shaft is different on the column-shift trany having 10 squarish splines. The floor shift trany input has 20 sharp splines and is 7/8” diameter. I have a new clutch disk that is correct for the floor-trany input shaft that is Datsun part# 30100-10601. The disk diameter is 7 7/8”. I’v also acquired a new throwout bearing # 30502-32200. I have been going over the online parts manuals for the 410 and the 520 and have scanned the exploded views and penciled in part numbers. The 320 parts manual that I find online has the column-shift trany only, so I couldn’t get part numbers for the floor-shift parts. Here are the pertinent pages from the manuals: There is none of this vintage stuff available to look at and study here in the middle of the country and I’m hoping that someone in Datsun-heaven on the west coast has some of this stuff to look at and give me some answers as to what I’ll need. Right now I’m thinking that I need a flywheel and pressure plate from the very early 520 pickup (J13 engine). I’ll also be needing to acquire or make the throwout bearing sleeve. If I can get my hands on a sleeve for a day or so, I can make a cad drawing and make one from bar stock. When I get this all formed up, I’ll run something in the classifieds for new or serviceable parts. If I’m wrong on any of this, get me on the right path. Any information on how to put this puzzle together will be greatly appreciated. As a wrapup, here are the main parts that I’m trying to nail down for now: throwout bearing sleeve or carrier the proper flywheel pressure plate I’ve collected most of the goodies that I’ll need to re-build the engine. I’m lacking the main-rod bearings but won’t know what I’ll need till I get inside. The 520 parts manual and other useful parts manuals are in here: http://www.carpartsmanual.com/ I got the 410 parts manual here: http://www.datsun510.com/manuals/Parts_Catalog_Datsun_Blue_Bird_410-411_1964-68.pdf Steve Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
I'd help if I could but my truck is all back together now. I have found that a lot of early MGB stuff fits the J motor (and the trans you have) directly (and is fairly inexpensive) May want to take a look at those clutch setups as I'm sure those are easier to locate to verify if they will work. If you are interested, I do have a set of J13 main bearings I could let go. Mark Quote Link to comment

I will be looking into that approach to this. I'll keep you in mind on the bearings. I'm guessing that this E1 has never been opened and the crank is standard measure, but won't know if the crank will need grinding till I can get her out and get a mic on it. . Thanks again.
