VFR800
If this supposed to help keep passengers calm, it's a fail. Was not meant for passengers so no fail here. Quote Link to comment
wayno
You misunderstand, the very fact that the photo of it is out there is the fail, one would hope that one person could fly an airliner from start to finish if needed, that photo tells me that no one is flying that plane, a computer is flying it, and if that computer got fucked up somehow, say a lightening strike, we all now know that instead of a pilot grabbing onto the controls of the airplane and trying to save it, some tech will be in there trying to reboot it before it hits the ground. Was not meant for passengers so no fail here. Quote Link to comment

laotsu
tail seems to short, like it would be prone to tumbling in the air. Quote Link to comment

q-tip
tail seems to short, like it would be prone to tumbling in the air. That's the point, the more unstable it is the more maneuverable it is. Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
quadruple redundancy, metal airframe directs any anomalous lightning strike away from the well shielded electronics. i've actually seen videos on how the frame of the airplane actually helps direct the lightning. basically (with boeing airplanes at least) the lightning can strike a wing and go out the other wing without exploding the gas inside the wings because the current runs along the frames and stuff. also, the controls (again, boeing airplanes) are still functional even with all of the old (i repeat OLD) technology that helps control. the computers, unless on auto pilot, only help direct and show flightpath and stuff. there's a lot of things that look like buttons that i think are actually fuses throughout the aircraft. and i know with the 747 at least there's a little prop that pops out the bottom of the wing to power hydraulics (i think) if there's an in air issue. 1 Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
this bugger, internet says it's off a 757 but you get the idea 2 Quote Link to comment
wayno
I'll keep my steering wheel, thankyou. :) Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
surprisingly with my issue with heights i can handle flying. i think it's because i can't actually see how far away the ground is or it might be the fact that i know how well engineered the things are. as long as i don't see any defects on the exterior i can fly just fine. hate it when the exterior surface looks shitty and fasteners are poking out Quote Link to comment
wayno
Being afraid of height is a strange thing for me, I am scared to death to climb a tree, while I can walk around on roofs without even thinking about it. I used to fly hanggliders, the higher I got, the more comfortable I was, I have been 19,000 feet in the air(with oxygen), I would get more scared the closer to the ground I got, especially if I could not tell the wind direction. The top photo is me. Me at 10,000 feet MSL, about 7,000 feet above the ground. Me being towed by an ultralight while also taking photos, some of my friends are setting up their gliders on top of the hill with Mt Rainier in the background :) Me landing my rigid wing hangglider :) Safe on the ground :) 2 Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
people look at me like i'm crazy when i tell them i have an issue. i can be on top of a building with a good railing and freak out, while i can walk on floor beams in the cab of a 747 with a clear view of the bottom of the airplane 2 stories below me and not have any issues. idk dude, but i understand Quote Link to comment
q-tip
and your 6'5". Us tall folk are supposed to have a problem with heights, but some of us do. Quote Link to comment
ericsb210
The family and I are flying out to Florida Sunday. How is this possible for a dude that won't go on the freeway and has to crawl or sometimes pull himself along on his belly when above any height of 10'? The medications that I am allowed to take may make me drool but all of those funny fears just slip n slide away. Yes, just like a Paul Simon song. Quote Link to comment

Just kidding. Me? Tall ladders? No Effing Way! Walk on a roof? Screw You! Fly an ultralight with nothing around you and nothing between your ass and the ground but a seat, a couple of cross beams and some cables? No problem. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
this bugger, internet says it's off a 757 but you get the idea Ram Air Turbine (RAT). A deploy-able air driven generator hooked up to to an aircraft electrical or hydraulic system to provide emergency power when all main systems are inoperative. 1 Quote Link to comment
