VFR800 Posted May 24, 2016 Report Share Posted May 24, 2016 I remember back in the mid 80's some Newsagent distributed magazine called "Take Off" had like weekly (maybe bi-monthly) issues all about different planes with photos and tech specs and tech drawings in it and the A-10,F-4 and F-14 ALWAYS took my interest. Such beauties!! And then there was the British "War Birds" publication! They would choose a specific historic aircraft, attempt to document the total production history, find all surviving craft, and track them down! Historic photos? Many! I found out that the replica "1st Lieutenant Hap Arnold" painted P12E [Army version of Navy F4B4] from March AFB was indeed a original craft from the Panama Canal Zone, not an original March AFB aircraft! I have scale models of the repainted "Hal Arnold" plane and the authentic Panama Canal color zone original aircraft. Yes, I built them both. Duplicating the cross bracing upper and lower wing wiring was a bitch! BTW, this airplane is still in existence at the "Planes of Fame" museum in Chino CA, unfortunately in its third paint sceme, without any reference to its prior history. I guess I might have to donate my 2 scale models to them in effort to complete their sadly lacky historical thread! Aside, they are trying to restore the original "Picadilly Lilly" B17 used in the "12 o'clock High" TV series! Any help would be appreciated. I still remember years ago when this plane would fly over the SoCal area and take aerial photos which they then sold to the local agencies to detect illegal additional structural additions to existing properties and dun them for back taxes!
