J-Luis
Pretty cool airship in Post 4969, the USS Shenandoah (ZR-1). I had no idea they were used by the US Navy in the 30's. I will no longer call them blimps. I guess the series of wrecks discouraged continued use. Still, what an impressive view that must have been, especially when air travel was so new to the world. Profile
As fighter planes became better and better you can see how easy it would have been to shoot one down plus we had to buy them from Germany as only they made the really big ones. After the Hendberg the uses of air ships was doomed. 1 Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
But so did Charles Lindbergh, and one must take into account that most of this happened before the war broke out Lindbergh went on to "redeem" himself during the war, and Ford Co. turned into a War Production dynamo to defeat Fascism One of Lingberg's "gotchas" was to fly a airplane along with an American fighter plane unit in the Pacific on a combat patrol. He would keep up with them in maneuvers and when the "regulars" would run low on fuel he would accompany them back to base, watch them land and refuel, all the while performing stunt flights to show that he could indeed teach them fuel conservation tactics while still accomplishing the designated mission/ 2 Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
USS Macon with on board trapeze launched fighter planes? If so, the wreck has been discovered and there were plans to restore the on board fighters as display units. Don't know if this rescue ever proceeded beyond the pipe dream stage. 1 Quote Link to comment
