i have to keep pumping to keep it running. once the carb begins to spit it dies.

a little history, its an a15 that was taken out of a totaled car, ive never seen it run, but i have no reason to believe that it isnt a runner. pretty much all of the accessories were taken off of my old a14 motor, besides the carb which is brand new out-of-box.

cylinders all tested between 110 and 120,  ive adjusted the valves, the carb has gas. all of the plugs seem to be burning evenly.

the wires are fine.

the timing was a bit retarded, after i compensated for that, it ran much better.  i can now feel the motor revving when i pump the gas, which i couldnt before. it still spits occupationally, but never bad enough to kill the engine. it still isnt idling though

the anti-dediling solenoid has been connected and operational this whole time, so that isnt an issue.

it seems like a vacuum leak bad enough to prevent idling would have to be pretty bad and obvious, no?

I had that same thought with my truck and had no luck until I just replaced every rubber vacuum hose with fresh ones. Didn't cost much and ended up being quicker than sticking a hose in my ear and listening to every connection point (which I did, without much success.)

Also - does it make a difference whether choke is opened or closed?

You say won't idle. Then turn the idle speed up! Adjust the idle mixture.

Carb spitting back is lean backfire. This isn't anything to do with idle and only happens when you rev it up in video..

You replaced the carb with A14 carb? Check the bolts are tight, gasket sealing.

Put your A14 intake on it.  Was in a accident (totaled) maybe intake cracked.

This.

Again, check your plugs. If the tip is white, lean. If its black and carboned up, rich. If its bad enough its not running right, might call to pick up some different jets. Checking your plugs is like taking a temperature. One you get this fuel issue corrected, you'll likely have to Regime it.

so after i corrected the timing, it was a matter of adjusting the carb.  foolish me for thinking it was ready to go straight from the box. it idles pretty well now.  i may still have to replace the mani, because its seems to be smoking slightly.

thanks everyone

lol fresh paint, did you look at the photo of my engine bay?

there is also possibility that its just oil that leaked down from running it without the valve cover. ill know for sure when i look at it in the daylight

Lol ya it's on the rough side. I've seen people do stuff like that though, so just throwin it out there.
