jovial_cynic
I'm getting my SR dialed in, but ever since I installed the engine/transmission into my 510, I've noticed that I can't get the shifter to get into 3rd gear. I haven't driven the car yet (still need to get the throttle cable installed, front sway bar modified/installed, etc.), so I'm hoping that maybe it's an issue of needing to be up to speed to get it into 3rd gear... but just sitting in place, foot on the clutch, going from gear to gear... it's like there's no third gear option. Top left: 1st Bottom left: 2nd Top middle: It won't go there Bottom middle: 4th Top right: 5th Bottom right: Reverse Anybody else experience this? Is there a fix? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Check the shifter isn't pinching the boot and the hole in the floor... or the carpet. There should be no obstructions. Quote Link to comment
jovial_cynic
There's no boot or carpet. The tunnel is still exposed from cutting it open to fix the SR. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The shifter does not move forward at all??? Place in neutral clutch out (peddle up) and bump engine over slightly, even a ratchet on the crank pulley. Then try again. Quote Link to comment
Nuclear Water Boy
Because 3rd and 4th are on the same shift rod and syncro hub you may have a problem. But I'd wait until you get the engine running and try from there as it may simply be hung up. But in the mean time do as King Rat says, if it doesn't work place it in 4th gear and get the rear tires off the ground then bumb the engine or turn it over with a breaker bar and socket on the crank nut. jovial_cynic
Ok - for clarification, the engine does run; I can fire it up and rev by hand (no throttle cable yet). In order to move it out of my shop so the exhaust doesn't kill me, I can put it into first, and move it just based on the idle. I can then jump into second while the car is still idling. However, it feels like there's no gate for the 3rd gear at all - I push the shifter where it should go, but it doesn't budge forward. So it's not that I can't get it into 3rd and nothing happens... it's the shifter won't even go into that spot. Idling, and then throwing it into reverse to get it back into the shop works just fine, too. Quote Link to comment
jovial_cynic
Ok - I spent a bunch of time researching how manual transmissions work, and I get how the gear selector forks are controlled by the shifter. And I understand that 3rd and 4th are on the same shift rod. However, I can't see how the car will drive in 4th gear but not 3rd gear, seeing how putting it into 4th (middle-rear) has the effect of *pushing* the collar forward, and putting it into 3rd has the effect of "pulling" the collar back. What could cause that lockout? Again, the shifter won't even go into the 3rd gear gate at all. I unbolted the cover to expose the piece that the shifter sits in (not sure what it's called) and tried to manually manipulate the rod, and everything but 3rd works just fine. EDIT: And... disregard that noise. I jumped into the car again to run it and get it through the gears, and it's very clear that 4th gear is also having a problem. The shifter goes into 4th just fine with the car off, but if I have the engine running and throw it into 4th, it grinds like mad. Toasted synchros? In any event, looks like it's time to drop the transmission out and repair/replace. Fun. Quote Link to comment
