73, 620 Rebuild - Aka White Lightning.

Round 2! Ding!.... Here is the 73 620 I picked up from Denmarkboy here the other week, future plans are simple, toss on the titans, lower it down some and drive it daily! I haven't really done much to it right now as I have some brake issues to resolve and that is my first step!

Here is the day she showed up in all her glory , first thing I did was removed that shin breaking tow hitch! the flat bar still there is welded to the frame, that will be cut off soon.

along with the Titans that will be used later on.

After taking delivery from Denmarkboy it was known that the master cylinder was bad. I started going through the rest of the braking system after finding a leaky wheel cylinder and decided it's time for some new pads and hardware kit! Well that and when I was beating off the rust sealed drums, the pads starting crumbling apart!

Here she's up on the stands waiting for the rest of the parts to be put back together.

I've cleaned up the inside some and have re-routed some wires, took the grill off and gave it a fresh coat of paint

Mid week I sprayed down damn near every nut in bolt with some WD-40, and again Friday night and am taking a fastener inventory list, just wish I would have done this last week before I left work as I took this coming week off to use some vacation time. Good thing I work for a fastener distributor, them ACE or Home Depot prices make me cringe! This isnt going to be a super fast build, get her on the road and tinker with while I commute.

For sure! it's packing the L16 / 3speed auto for now, one of the reasons I picked it up as I injured my back some years ago that never really fully healed unless I have some surgery done that I have declined to do for now. Bench seat will be removed and some comfy buckets fab'd in.

Got a few things done today, White Lightning and I did battle for about 45 mins on the rear bumper, finally the bitch gave in and broke free! went through the engine bay and replaced all the corroded fuel lines, tossed in some new spark-plugs and messed with the timing a tad. Overall she's runnin OK.

Here is her ass with that monstrosity of a bumper.......

and after we worked out some, she slimmed down, much better!

New fuel lines and cleaning up the engine bay has started. got a friend that works at an audio place that is going to grab me some wire loom so I can clean that up, also need to replace the Neg and Pos cables.

mocked up the titans, doing a little dreaming.....

Kind of at a stand-still right now till I get the new wheel cylinder and master cylinder in, don't want to get too crazy with tearing it down right away.

Had to stop by my insurance company and look over my policy, did up a quick mock quote and when the lady asked if I could bring it by so they can take some pictures.....I asked why and she said it falls under the realm of " Antique/classic collectors " criteria I kinda smirked and said if she seen it now she would probably think differently! She then asked what I valued it at, I said I honestly didn't know, the market is up and down and it isn't in pristine condition.......she blurted out " well 3 grand is about right! " I damn near fell out of my chair laughing!

best to buy new Taiwan made masters

those cardone I always had a hard time sealing the oil resivoir tubes. alwasy leaked. I would never buy another unless ai truely have to.

Instead of worrying about titan wheels I would be getting new rubber heater hoses and rad hoses ect.......

well in his defense , I baught the master because the one in the truck I sold him failed , and the one ( crappy ) master i got  has a lifetime warranty .

again in his defense , i gave him the titans in the deal , so my guess would be he is just taking advantage of the the fact that he already has them . so why not get em on ..

and your right those old rubbers are a cheap important p.m.

oh and by the way dude " You Got Parts Mail " IMAG2922_zpsmcenc2zc.jpg

Hoses were actually on order, should hit my door by tomorrow, only reason I was able to do the fuel line is because I already had 20ft of brand new stuff laying around from another project. Now that I have the MC/WC here they are both installed with the new shoes I picked up last week, the MC has been bench bled and I'm just waiting for my helper to get home to assist me at the wheels.

Got everything together and back down on the ground today, while up on the stands she had good pedal pressure but once on the ground running, the pedal went semi limp again. There were no visible air bubbles when I bench bled the master, I've done each wheel two times now and each wheel cylinder pees a nice steady stream of fluid so that has me kind of stumped.

Encountered issues with both rear adjusters, I think they may be bad and need replaced as I took both apart, cleaned and lubed them back up but once installed there  is no adjusting to them.

While I had it running, sounded like a 9MM went off in the cab, crawled below and found a decent tear in the muffler, it appears the tail-pipe from the muffler back is fairly corroded and needs replaced. I have a nice magnaflow muffler I can fab up and toss in with a new rear section.

Decided to run it down the road over to my brothers house which is a few blocks down, about half way she started to vibrate pretty good with a decent clunk going on. limped it back home, got it back up on the stands and noticed the carrier bearing ( bearing looks ok, rubber is shot ) disintegrated on the short drive. Previously when I inspected it, there wasn't much play so I am glad it happened now and not on the freeway.

time to do some more rockauto shopping! B)

  • 11 months later...

Been awhile, hit a few bumps in the road and had to store this at a relatives house while I was battling my old slumlord in court. In a new house now with room to start back in on this within the next few weeks. Went to go fire it up last night and when I got there some asshole had decided they needed my battery more than I did and thought it would be funny to slash the passenger tires so I got a flat bed trailer from a friend to bring it home.

Before I had to park it, I was able to get the break issues resolved but I noticed while moving it around by hand the pass front drum is locking/dragging a little.Other than that my main goal is to get power to the wheels, get it to the exhaust shop so she can breathe again and move forward with my original goal.

Will update as progress moves in the right direction.

adjust the rear brakes tighter might help clear up limp

I'll give that a whirl, I got some new drums for the rear, need to replace one that somehow managed to break during removal of old pads last year, also going to go over the fronts again and see if I can re-adjust for better results now that I'm setup with my tool box,and everything else.

I read your pm , I don't have any other auto transmissions at this time. I will look / ask around locally and see what I can do.

Sorry to here about the struggles , it's good to here and see some progress . Keep it up !

Thanks! it seems all the 620's up this way have gone to the crushers now, I didn't want to get too extreme with this build but a 5 spd swap down the road is starting to look tempting.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well got the break issues resolved over the last few days and was able to take it out for the real first test drive since I bought it last year, noticed a few other issues that will need to be worked on but got it home and put back up on the stands so I could resume work this morning. When I awoke and got moving around to the garage, I was greeted with a huge puddle of trans fluid on the ground  , after a few hours of cleanup and inspection I cant for the life of me figure out where it leaked from.

What was spose to be a fix a few issues and daily while I tinker on it appears to have turned into a full blown drive train re-build. Sadly, its going to have to wait so I can fix a few things on the daily so I can get to work and make a paycheck so I can dump into it.

Will update progress as cash flow and time allows.
