85"720
Will you notice a difference in power or mpg after retorque the head Quote Link to comment
wayno
You shouldn't, but I don't know everything. Why you need to re-torque the Z series engines is to keep from going through/blowing head gaskets, they are known for blowing them, and the fix is to re-torque each headbolt in no particular order to factory spec, the order don't matter, you just have to do all of them. 85"720
I heard that a lot about the z24. Just want to know if they were loose that you'll lose compression Quote Link to comment
wayno
I heard that a lot about the z24. Just want to know if they were loose that you'll lose compression If you have lost compression, you would already likely need a new head gasket, unless you have other major problems. You see there are other things that will likely happen if you have loose head bolts, there are holes in the block around the cylinders, so either you will get water in your oil, or if you pull the the radiator cap off and rev the engine, it can blow the antifreeze out the top from the compression compressing/pushing air into the water jacket. datzenmike
Make sure the engine is dead cold before re-torquing any bolts. The bolts don't come loose, the gasket delaminates and compresses from a 100K of thermal cycling. Once the clamping force drops the pressure in the cylinders just forces it's way out and the gasket is blown. Just keep the bolts at 60 ft lbs by checking them every tune up. Quote Link to comment
720inOlyWa
It takes only minutes and pretty much eliminates your basic head gasket concerns. If you own a Z24 motor, you just can’t be afraid of your head bolts... Quote Link to comment
