81SVN20
I have an '81 720 and my left or right signals dont come on... wondering if its the connection or is my switch going bad... But my hazards work fine so I know the lights aren't burnt out... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Unlikely the fuse as the dash gauges and back up lamps would also be affected. You do have back up lamps? yes??? Turn the key on, turn the turn signal to left or right, now try moving the hazard switch slightly towards the ON position until the turn signal starts flashing. If this does not work swap the turn signal and the 4 way flasher units. If the 4 way stops and the turn signal begin working then the flasher unit was bad. Quote Link to comment

Thanks for the reply I'm going to try that out and also just clean up all the connections as well... Quote Link to comment
Fat510
The hazard switch and/or the plug on it may be bad, in my truck the hazards have to be in the "on" position for them to work Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The hazards have to disconnect the turn signal wires and connect the tail lights to the 4 way flasher when turned on. When turned off they disconnect the 4 way and reconnect the turn signals again. I've found that the switch often travels too far and goes right past the turn signal connections. Spent an hour on a friend's 720 truing to fix his signals and everything kept coming back the the 4 way switch. I wiggled it and away they went. Lesson learned. Seems to be a common problem with them. Quote Link to comment
that-son
my turn signals won't work when my headlights don't work or when the headlamp relay is unplugged. i removed the headlamp relay, cleaned all contacts and everything now works. Quote Link to comment
81SVN20
Thanks for all the replies and advice guys I cleaned up the contacts with some electro cleaner and now its working smooth.... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
So it was the turn signal switch then... Quote Link to comment
newdatsunowner720
I have the same problem as this guy's post but my hazards are a no go. Also my gauge cluster only work when I kinda tap on the headlight switch and finally comes on. I'm kinda New at this car fixing stuff as this is my first car project ever lol Quote Link to comment
JoeCool
I checked all the other stuff, relays, cleaned and lightly sanded contacts, etc, and still nothing. My issue was the switch itself, replaced it and it works fine. But then again my headlights were all all wonky too. Quote Link to comment

I'm kinda New at this car fixing stuff as this is my first car project ever lol Wiggle the emergency flasher switch to get good contact. Swap the turn and the emergency flashers. If the turns stop working then the flasher was bad. Hell the flasher may have been swapped to fix the turn flashers and the 4 way never replaced! Quote Link to comment

CicliDevotion
My Turn signals work in both directions but when my hazards are on, only the left side works. What should I check out first? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Hazard switch. The Green/White stripe wire is not making contact. Try working the switch on and off many times to clean the contacts if nothing, unplug the emergency switch several times to assure good contact. I find the 720 E switch very cheap and unreliable. newdatsunowner720
Mike I tried out your little trick today and nothing happened. I guess something is broke or just so old it don't wanna work. I need to get my signals working that's for sure. Will that FSM have turn signal wiring diagram that could help me trace the problem? Are you saying that the turn signals are not working now? Quote Link to comment
newdatsunowner720
Yea my turn signals aren't working , actually both aren't working Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Split the cover on the column open by unscrewing it. Try spraying with contact cleaner and working the lever. Both the turn signals and the 4 way warning flashers have the 4 way switch in common. Is it unplugged? Quote Link to comment
newdatsunowner720
I'll check it out once I get an off day , sorry work is keeping me from progress on my truck . I'll get back to you once I get the column and all that removed like you said Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
Can anyone tell me where to get a hazard switch? Quote Link to comment
720_Jeff
New is NLA, used probably, eBay is the easiest place. Is yours missing, or maybe not working or.... Probably just needs to be cleaned up a bit. They can be taken apart, cleaned and new dielectric grease applied and will probably last you longer than you want. 1 hour ago, Datsun pickup said: Can anyone tell me where to get a hazard switch? 1 Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
Two of the wires have been chopped and joined together. So I would want a new one. Quote Link to comment
720_Jeff
Nothing new available. Maybe, something that will work on RockAuto. Otherwise, about $200 from a guy on FB that takes them apart, cleans, dielectric grease and reassembles them. Quote Link to comment
Datsun pickup
How would I be able to take it apart and rebuild it? Quote Link to comment
Draker
Remove the steering wheel, remove the switch. Couple screws.. and it’s open. Just cause some wires are joined together doesn’t make it bad. It’s a mechanical switch. There are different versions of it though. 1 Quote Link to comment
