What Transmissions are compatible with our 1984 Datsun Nissan720, 4x4, Manual, Kc?

Any Z series 5 speed will fit but check your overall transmission length. It's either 31.5" or 26". Four by fours use a wide ratio gear set so if off road crawling is really important then this will narrow your options to 4x4 transmissions.

 

If 26" you will have to get one from another 720. If 31.5" long any earlier Z series 720 or '80-'83 200sx. You can use a 2wd transmission if available. It will have a speedometer drive in it that you don't need but that's ok.

You would you have to grab the longer driveline too if swapping in a shorter tranny, right?

Yes, it's the primary between trans and transfer case. Foot and a half instead of a foot long. Shifter hole in floor would be slightly forward and your floor console would need replacing or removing.
