a.d._510_n_ok
to carry a larger spare? I currently carry an early 80s 200sx 14" steel wheel as a spare but would like to be able to carry fifth "swastika" but with a 195/50 tire it won't fit. has anyone modified their carrier? datzenmike
Aren't the stock tires for the 510 5.60 X 13" so.... they are 23.2 " tall. Swastikas are 15"? 195/50R 15's are 22.7" tall so should fit the well. Carry it flat and keep a can of compressed air to inflate it if needed. 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Ahhh it's an A10, my bad. But all my info shows a spare tire well in the floor of the trunk. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
But all my info shows a spare tire well in the floor of the trunk. Most wagons have a steel framed carrier under the gas tank, not a trunk mounted spare. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
What about ditching the metal frame altogether and just going with a newer carrier/winder? Quote Link to comment
fritzdixxon
I have been toying with the idea of taking a tire well from a trunked car and welding it into the floor. I winter drive the wagon and the thought of crawling under the car to pull out the spare does not apeal to me. Plus it is better for the rim is it is not just a steelie. And yes I am talking aboot a stereotypical Canadian winter -40's with -60's wind chills and deep ass snowbanks. It is funny to me when i hear muricans talking aboot cold starting and cars not liking it.There has yet to be a time a time that the car didn't fire up for me. Yes I have hotboxed a few igloo's in my day. Quote Link to comment
Son_of_a_Datsun_Guy
I just cut off the piece that slides between the wheel hub and narrowed it so it fit through my spare, then rewelded it back onto the chain. My spare is a 14x6 Toyota steelie with a 185/65R tire on it. I think it's a little bigger than the stock spare, but still fits in the gas tank recess. Quote Link to comment

This might be difficult because the tank is shaped so that it actually runs about halfway across the pan of the car, from the passenger side to the driver side middle. The way the original spare fits is because the tank has a curved recess in it. You would have to modify the tank itself to put in a wheel well wouldn't you? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yup. The 710 is the same way. Why not get better tires? Flats are very uncommon and old worn out or damaged tires is asking for trouble. If you have excessive wear on the fronts then you have a toe or camber problem... fix it. Quote Link to comment
fritzdixxon
I buy a new winter tires quite reg, its more that I am a boyscout and always like to be prepared, its also the snowboarding road trip car so when you are 800 k from home its even more important and I have never been one to rely on things like CAA. fritzdixxon
Like I said though it's just been something I was thinking about, finding time to get the motor in has been in the fore front of my concerns. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well you could grease and check the tire holder and crank down now to make sure it will work then. A snow boarder who doesn't like the cold??? wtf? Quote Link to comment
fritzdixxon
Lol i thrive in the cold, its more the kicked up ice/slush/snow that i am trting to avoid, those back meats arw always spining and sliding one way or another. a nice clean easy to reach tire that I hope to never have to use would be the end goal. ByStickel
Here's an idea: Make a storage pod (full of weed) that attaches in the spare tire area. put your spare in the interior, probably upright, along one side. Problem solved. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I was thinking of relocating the battery back there just above the tire. Quote Link to comment
HRH
Yes I did, but do you have a central winch anchor or is it like the Maxima 910? Mine has a crossbar like a 4 star tire wrench that holds the tire to the back cargo area. We cut the rear down tube and added a few inches into it, which made enough wiggle room to fit the fullsize 15x7 spare with 195 wide tire. Think I have it on my build thread somewhere.
