The Trump administration is slowly filling positions below the cabinet officer level in the “mission agencies” of the federal government (e.g., EPA, NOAA , Interior, DOE, etc. whose job it is to implement a specific set of statutory mandates). The appointed individuals are leading day-to-day decision-making on policies from public health and safety to environmental protection to critical applied science programs. In other words, the decisions these appointees make will affect everyone in the country.

 

The job of the agencies and their political leadership is to represent the public interest. It is not to serve the private interests of particular industries and companies, or even to push political viewpoints, but to implement legislative mandates in the interest of the American public. After all, who else but government can do this? Our laws call for the water and air to be clean, our workers and communities to be safe, our environment to be healthy and our science to be robust and fundamental to better policy and decision-making. That is what mission agencies are tasked to do.

European finance ministers are worried. They say the United States' big tax reform bill contains measures that would unfairly disadvantage European business and contravene global fair-taxation rules. Are they right?

"It is important that the U.S. government's rights over domestic tax policy be exercised in a way that adheres with international obligations to which it has signed-up. First, the House bill proposed a new "excise tax" of 20 percent, levied on payments made when an American company buys goods or services from a foreign subsidiary or "affiliate" — unless the subsidiary elects to treat the payments as income in the US.

 

The European finance ministers argued that this measure would break WTO rules because it levies a tax only on foreign goods and services, not on the equivalent domestically produced goods and services. Reality is a subjective internal construct.

 

In my fiscally responsible reality, tax cuts and deregulation have created three bubbles in the passed that all burst spectacularly. But doing it again when corporate stock evaluations are at record highs because they are making record profits and holding record reserves of cash, productivity is at record highs but inflation adjusted middle income has been flat for 50 years, and their capital wealth and savings are at an all time low, while at the top 1% their capital wealth has never been this high except for the late 1920s right before the Great Depression... No in my reality a corporation already making $13.77 billion in profits last year doesn't need to pay 40% less in taxes so they can make $1.3 billion more at the expense of the federal budget. In fact, in my reality that's pretty fucking grotesque.

 

In other people's reality though, this is going to make America great again because now these bloated top heavy corporations are going to invest in manufacturing, and for a short time, middle income tax will go down 16% and they'll get a whole $1,000 back (if you live in the right state).
