From today’s opinion by Justice Samuel Alito (for four justices) in Matal v. Tam, the “Slants” case:

[The idea that the government may restrict] speech expressing ideas that offend … strikes at the heart of the First Amendment. Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express “the thought that we hate.”

Well just like General Discussion (talk about anything) this is not exactly true. See Brandenberg v Ohio. Yes you have free speech except where...  Only speech that poses an imminent danger of unlawful action, where the speaker has the intention to incite such action and there is the likelihood that this will be the consequence of his or her speech, may be restricted and punished by that law. So some 'free speech' is protected and some is not. In addition the State can impose their own laws and bring civil suit against some hate speech.

New citizenship guide obligations include taxes, census, treaties

OTTAWA – Respecting treaties with Indigenous Peoples, paying taxes and filling out the census are listed as mandatory obligations of Canadian citizenship in a draft version of a new study guide for the citizenship exam.

The working copy obtained by The Canadian Press suggests the federal government has completely overhauled the book used by prospective Canadians to prepare for the test.

The current “Discover Canada” guide dates back to 2011 when the previous Conservative government did its own overhaul designed to provide more information on Canadian values and history.

Some of the Conservatives’ insertions attracted controversy, including increased detail about the War of 1812 and a warning that certain “barbaric cultural practices,” such as honour killings and female genital mutilation, are crimes in Canada.

In the draft version, the reference to barbaric cultural practices is gone, as is the inclusion of getting a job as one of the responsibilities of citizenship

Instead, the proposed new guide breaks down the responsibilities of citizenship into two categories: voluntary and mandatory.

Voluntary responsibilities are listed as respecting the human rights of others, understanding official bilingualism and participating in the political process.

I found the census very intrusive. Their lackeys that come to the door are worse than Jehovah's witless. I will never speak french. Ever. Refused to learn it when forced down my throat in school. Every time I pick up something to read the ingredients I get the french side. Shove your french up your bi-lingual.

My late Father hated it when the Census people would choose his house for additional survey stuff and under Australian law you cannot refuse.

Ironically my Father was Jehovah's Witness.

Not retarded. All of Europe is trying to get rid of gas. Diesels are the big thing. Electric would be ok and that hydrogen train that emits only water????? Well what about the power for making the hydrogen??? nuclear? coal fired? If wind ok.

Above all it's CNN. The chicken little " the sky is falling" of news.

That was my first thought. Control the headlines. Good or bad doesn't much matter. Keep the hounds chewing steak at the fence while you make your entrance.

Solar and Hydrogen re-gen. Europe is already largely building up in this direction. Powering Eva with gas is a stupid stop gap solution. Owning the EV will, in many cases, drive the consumer to cleaner, cheaper energy.

Great news ! more and cheaper fuel for us.I don't get the "ban combustion engines" thing.I recently smogged the wife's 2007 Toyota Corolla.Out of the three things they measured two were zero and the third showed 1 part per million. It can't be emitting shit with those numbers.

Well a gallon of gas has about 4.5 X  1025 atoms. That's 450,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Divide that by 1,000,000 you get 4.5 X 1019  atoms. Or 450,000,000,000,000,000,000. Now it's not a small emission.

Maybe they mean a molecule of gas? If a molecule was 100 atoms this is reduced to 4.5 X1017

NO emission? Well there are 2.53 X 1022 of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in a cubic meter of air. If one in every 1,000,000 atoms joins with a nitrogen atom then a cubic meter of 'burned air' in an engine will produce 2.53 X 1016 NO molecules. That's 2,530,000,000,000,000,000
