Q says that you cannot control them, it's pointless to try and I agree. The best you can do is limit who get's control of them. You can keep up the pretense of banning certain arms just for good measure as some of them are insane anyway but better control of who can get one legally would be time better spent. Having said that, crazy people and criminals will find a way but practically giving them to them is also insane. Gun ownership should be hard earned for the deserving and impossible for everyone else.  Maybe more money should be spent on mental health and how we treat others as they grow up in schools. Rather than having to clean up the mess and hire armed guards later.

Not advocating that peoples rights to own guns should be taken away. We just have to do a better job of screening the bad apples from the good ones. If people are on meds because of depression, hearing voices, seeing a therapist because they have violent tendencies, road rage, got arrested for dv, advertising that they will go and kill on social media, yes they should not own guns.

Deputy assigned to Florida school 'never went in' during shooting, sheriff says

The school resource deputy who was on patrol at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14 resigned Thursday after video surveillance showed he never entered the school, even though he "clearly" knew there was a shooting taking place, officials said.

Deputy Scot Peterson, of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, was stationed on the school’s campus when Nikolas Cruz opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, leaving 17 people dead and others wounded.

Sheriff Scott Israel during a press conference Thursday said video showed Peterson arriving at the west side of the building where the shooting took place. Peterson, Israel said, took up a position but "never went in."

Peterson, according to the sheriff, "was absolutely on campus through this entire event." The deputy was armed and in uniform during the shooting, but never entered the building despite "clearly" knowing a shooting was happening, Israel said.

The sheriff said he believes Peterson remained outside of the building for roughly four minutes, while the shooting in total lasted around six minutes. Israel said the officer never fired his weapon.

Armed deputy at Florida school resigns after failing to engage shooter

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb 22 (Reuters) - The armed sheriff's deputy assigned to the Florida high school where 17 people were shot and killed has resigned rather than face suspension after an internal investigation showed he failed to enter the school to confront the gunman during the attack, the county sheriff said on Thursday.

Could have and should have, the price is going to be high. The person had the training to be a superior shooter

That won't help the proposal of armed security on campus...

The false term is used for the sole purpose of fear mongering. It’s a non starter to try to begin a debate or conversation with a blatant lie. No pro 2A individual is even going to listen to the first sentence after hearing assault rifle when it’s a sporting carbine. If there’s to be any legitimate conversation, both sides need to be honest and speak without rhetoric.

Edit: picture this...a guy shows up at a Datsun meet that you’re at. He proceeds to talk about his “all original numbers matching car” with “original libres on it”. You look at the car, it has appliance mesh knock offs and a rotary swap. You now know dude has no damn clue what he’s talking about. Are you going to be willing to converse about the future of Datsun culture with him? My guess is an emphatic hell no. That’s how anti 2A with their lack of knowledge comes off.

I enjoyed reading that.

So the good guy with a gun was not willing to handle the bad guy with a gun?

It's only a shotgun. It's not like they gave her an M249 SAW or something. This kid is probably more gun adept than most adults, or that Sheriff that hid behind his car.

Oh yeah, this is a SAW, and yes, there is a Civilian Version that is SEMI AUTO!!!

Start them young and they learn to respect the firearm and are safer with it.

Exactly. Growing up we had a gun closet. It had a padlock on the door and that's where the firearms were kept. I knew I couldn't touch anything or go in there unless my dad was there, and I knew I'd get an ass kicking if I did and he wasn't. We used to go to the range and plink .22's when I was like 6 or 7, had my junior hunting permit at 12, and hunting permit at 16. Gun safety starts at an early age!

I think he was near retirement. Things are different when you get older. You spend your life working and risking yourself for others and expect to get some time for yourself at the end. You don't expect to get blown away. Not saying right or wrong here just it makes you think about things differently. You may be slightly hesitant to increased risk of what's left of your life. Perhaps security guards should be selected that are younger.
