New York Drops Unit That Spied on Muslims

The New York Police Department has abandoned a secretive program that dispatched plainclothes detectives into Muslim neighborhoods to eavesdrop on conversations and built detailed files on where people ate, prayed and shopped, the department said.

 

The Demographics Unit was the brainchild of the Central Intelligence Agency officer Lawrence Sanchez, who helped establish it in 2003 while working at the Police Department and while he was still on the spy agency’s payroll.

 

The police also designated entire mosques as suspected “terrorism enterprises,” a label that the police claimed allowed them to collect the license plate numbers of every car in mosque parking lots, videotape worshipers coming and going, and record sermons using informants wearing hidden microphones.

 

“The Demographics Unit created psychological warfare in our community,” said Linda Sarsour, of the Arab American Association of New York. “Those documents, they showed where we live. That’s the cafe where I eat. That’s where I pray. That’s where I buy my groceries. They were able to see their entire lives on those maps. And it completely messed with the psyche of the community.”

 

As a candidate, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was “deeply troubled” by the tactic of surveilling mosques.

The Paterson mosque that some neighbors said the suspect in Tuesday's deadly terror attack in New York City attended was among several in New Jersey that the New York Police Department targeted as part of a broad surveillance program that was intended to identify "budding terrorist conspiracies."

 

Under the surveillance program, the NYPD allegedly used "mosque crawlers" to listen in on sermons and conversations at mosques and report back what they heard. Officers also recorded license plate numbers, mounted cameras on light poles, mapped and photographed mosques, and listed their ethnic makeup, according to The Associated Press, which first disclosed the existence of the program in 2011, and NYPD documents.

 

Disclosure of the program's existence triggered two federal lawsuits. The NYPD agreed to greater oversight of its intelligence-gathering operations this year in an attempt to settle one of the suits. The department discontinued the surveillance program in 2014.

Not many people are complaining about what he tweets? What planet are you on? It's not just liberals who are embarrassed by Trumps disregard for the weight of his office. What Ratwagon1600 said should be a wakeup call. What Trump tweets may be what we're all thinking, but I would expect my president to know better than to voice it publicly. Why, because the executive branch of government publicly calling for the death penalty supersedes the objective process of justice. Trump's carelessness gives this human shitsack's lawyer valid leverage to find a favorable "unbiased" jury outside of NYC.
