There’s An Elephant In Harvey Weinstein’s Hotel Room

Buried beneath the sickening story of Harvey Weinstein's abuse is another story — the problem of casting women by their fuckability — and who that leaves out.

The elephant in the room in discussions about the alleged crimes and misdemeanors of Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein looks eerily similar to an elephant of the past. It is the Race elephant. And among the allegations, the question of race is one that we are not really looking to engage with, because it is knotty and gnarly. But it bears talking about, because there are black women in Hollywood, and not talking about it does us all a disservice.

In an industry as white as Hollywood, the racially problematic “attraction question” is part of what reduces the shelf life of black actresses as a matter of course, causing many of them to get half as far in twice the time it takes their white counterparts. To be deemed “fuckable” is not the honor a certain kind of man (and woman) believes it to be, but the ideas of fuckability are entrenched, and they serve to exclude black women very early on in the conversation — while dooming the women who do go on to get the roles to gross sexual harassment or assault.

Most of us who have or will face sexual harassment and/or assault will not be famous, and we will not be attacked on yachts or in fancy hotels. But the narrative coming out of Hollywood right now is about the victims who have come forward with allegations specifically against Harvey Weinstein, and that list is largely made up of white women.

Huh? Black women are not fuckable? Who would have guessed?

Bill Cosby would disagree...

"And among the allegations, the question of race is one that we are not really looking to engage with, because it is knotty and gnarly."

Uh, Can I call BS there?

No one is saying the question of race in Hollywood shouldn't be talked about. In fact it is and has been talked about extensively, and by people far more insightful and genuine. This writer is conflating the race issue with Hollywood FINALLY being called out for their power players like Cosby and Weinerstein being sexual predator. This hambone article is doing both causes a disservice . So is this Dim person saying in a round about way that all actresses fuck their way to the top and black women are at a disadvantage because they aren't "fuckable"? How is that not the most sexist racist thing I've ever heard?

I forgot the sarcasm font... sorry.

Bad enough being a sexual predator, but a racist sexual predator? disgusting.

I got it, I just had to make the Cosby Weinerstein  B&W link to underscore the hypocrisy of that article.

Kathy Griffin Dishes on Her Feud With ‘Fame Whore’ Lawyer Lisa Bloom—and Bloom Returns Fire

Self-styled civil rights lawyer, feminist crusader, and television personality Lisa Bloom—who has spent the past two weeks on a media apology tour for her surprising, and surprisingly aggressive, representation of disgraced Hollywood mogul and alleged sexual assaulter Harvey Weinstein—has already damaged her brand as a champion of women who’ve suffered workplace harassment, discrimination, and worse.

Now Bloom, the daughter of high-profile feminist attorney Gloria Allred, has an influential new critic to cope with: famed comedian and former client Kathy Griffin.

Griffin hired Bloom last June to help her navigate the career-wounding Donald Trump/severed head controversy, and she detailed her brief, unhappy experience with the Los Angeles attorney on Sunday in an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast.

In the late-night video, which Griffin made in her pajamas in her Sydney, Australia, hotel room in the midst of a two-month international comedy tour, the comedian continued: “There’s right and wrong, and I think it’s time to expose some stuff. I hired her [bloom] for a couple of days during my Trump mask scandal. It didn’t go well.

“If you want my Lisa Bloom statement, anybody, OK, here it is. Yes, I got Bloomed. Yes, I did not have a good experience with her. I felt that she and her husband exacerbated my personal situation. That horrible press conference was a disaster.”

“That press conference exacerbated my situation greatly,” Griffin said. “I didn’t know I was going to her office, and that I would be under a fucking banner that said ‘Lisabloom.com,’ and that she would hand me a coffee cup that said ‘Lisabloom.com.’ It was one of the worst days of my life.”

So it was the press conference that did her in ? it had nothing to do with the severed head ?

Domestic violence case against 'culturally incompetent' defendant dropped

MANCHESTER, NH — A judge has ended efforts to reinstate a domestic-violence prosecution against Augustin Bahati, the Congolese refugee deemed culturally incompetent to stand trial earlier this year.

Circuit Court Judge Kimberly Chabot said she wouldn’t grant city prosecutors a do-over of the case and dismissed the misdemeanor charges against Bahati, 33: four counts of domestic violence and one of sexual assault.

Earlier this year Bahati avoided trial after the assistant city solicitor in charge of the domestic violence unit — Andrea Muller — accepted a psychologist’s findings that he lacked the cultural competency to participate in the American justice system.

New Hampshire law contains no provision that allows for cultural incompetence, and MacDonald’s office has said that Muller should have fought the incompetency finding.

Who Is 'What Happened' For? Maybe Hillary Clinton Most Of All

Months after the world watched her endure a brutal humiliation, Hillary Clinton walks into her study. She sits down at her computer, sighs, pinches the bridge of her nose.

"OK, everyone. Shut the hell up and listen," she mutters.

And then she types feverishly for weeks — or however long it takes to pound out 469 pages.

If Trump's combative inauguration speech was "a howl from the white nationalist gut," as Clinton puts it, her book is a howl from the gut of Hermione Granger — the embattled cry of the hyper-competent woman who desperately wishes the world were a meritocracy.
