Portland police to halt, purge all gang designations

Three Portland police supervisors announced Friday that the Portland Police Bureau would halt its more than two-decade practice of designating gang members on Oct. 15.

Portland police next month will end their more than 20-year-old practice of designating people as gang members or gang associates in response to strong community concerns about the labels that have disproportionately affected minorities.

The Police Bureau recognizes that the gang designations have led to "unintended consequences'' and served as lifelong barriers for those who have shunned the gang lifestyle and tried to get jobs, said Acting Tactical Operations Capt. Andy Shearer.

A review by Oregonian/OregonLive reporter Carli Brosseau last year found that of the 359 "criminal gang affiliates'' flagged in Portland's database as of last summer, 81 percent were part of a racial or ethnic minority. She obtained the list, names removed, only after appealing the city's attempt to keep it from public view.

Leaders from Black Male Achievement, former police Assistant Chief Kevin Modica and others have lobbied to end the designations.

Phillip-Robbins, executive director of MRG Foundation that works for social justice and against racial inequities, asked police what steps they're taking to get rid of "other forms of profiling?''

Choo Fair, who works as a mentor for Multnomah County probation and parole and is a former Bloods gang member, praised the move.

"It's a beautiful thing. They can no longer label anybody,'' he said.

He expects it also will affect county parole and probation officers, who sometimes find an offender in violation of their probation because they continued to hang out with known gang members.

Where do Oregon gun owners live? (interactive)

No one keeps a list of all Oregon gun owners.

But state and federal authorities do require licenses for people who carry concealed weapons, gun sellers and hunters. That tells us something.

The Oregonian/OregonLive's data team compiled a file for each of these imperfect measures, county by county. Then designer and developer Mark Friesen combined them on one map, along with a layer showing gun death rates per county.

First link won't open.

Second link does but doesn't really show any fraud. 6,000 voters registered same day, no indication of party affiliation. Legally, mind you. Presuming fake because most of them failed to get local drivers licenses. I know a shit ton of people who keep drivers licenses from the state they used to live in. It's quite common.

Seems like a valid license is needed. How can you get a license in another state without surrendering your old one??? Duh! Is this how it works down there???

Opened it now. 60 day law is never followed. Especially college kids. They only go for four or five year then return home. They commonly keep their licenses. I did. J-walking is also illegal. Some laws are there so enforcement is possible. Not required.

There may be busses of people from out of state brought in to vote. Totally possible. But this is not at all evidence of such. A video of a bus with a confession or two from riders would be what is called evidence. Seems there would be a couple with so many thousands of people involved...

Seems to me a political party could pay several people to join these buses, only to turn around and rat them out to discredit an opposing party. Just how many people we talking about here? say 5,000 to swing the results. That's over 62 buses. Good luck borrowing or renting this.

Gee, I wonder what agenda they could have here?

It's fucking gun control, bitches. The Oregon gov't won't be happy until they turn into Calif. 2.0.

I'm thinking Oregon is doing their own thing.California has nothing to do with it.If it means anything we all still have our guns here.Nobody has taken them away.

If you look at the link it's an old story. Oregon actually does have a defacto registry now. Oregon has become extremely hostile to gun owners in recent years. One of the many reasons I got out. And, John, tell us about all the condition that come along with being allowed to keep your guns in California. Still feel free?

9/11,  I was working. Another nurse came up to the desk and said something about a big hole in the side of the trade tower.. An hour or so before when making rounds and passing out meds happen to see a advertisement for a Godzilla movie remake where the creature went through a building. Made the comment it has to be some kind of publicity stunt. A few min later went to hang an IV, when it became all to real. The station is always loud, people talking, it was quiet the rest of the day. Family members came up, some brought children, all quiet. Everyone listening to what was going on.

There are no conditions that i find unfair, unless of course you're a criminal planning a crime and will eventually have something to hide. The one gripe i have with gun owners is the resistance to background checks. If you're not a convicted felon or mentally ill you have no reason to not cooperate.I think all this was covered a long time ago in the first pages of "Cuz Merica" And yes i'm still free.

Yeah, Oregon is bad ass. God forbid they should turn into Cali.....never mind, they are worse

I think that's the Oregon Country fair.. Held out in Veneta, Oregon. That's where I grew up.. Now I live 10 miles north.

I somehow escaped becoming what you see in the picture.

Really? So, there's not a huge list of prohibited firearms? No BS list of features that classifies almost everything as an assault weapon? You can buy as much ammo as you want, wherever you want without a background check and fee? You can gift, loan and borrow from friends? You can use factory magazines of whatever capacity? You don't have to register what you already own? You can build 80% guns without putting them on a list? You can use your own judgment when it comes to storage? You can carry without permission?

Sounds pretty free to me. Or did I just get bad info?

I don't think the info is the issue with your position.

Our definition of free must be different. With that said,i don't need high capacity magazines,i don't need to stockpile ammo for the apocalypse and i'm not worried about registering what i have.I would also never loan, borrow or gift a gun to a friend. In reality you can do whatever you want with a gun until you do something stupid with it.Then you're fucked.Do you know of anybody that has had his guns taken away just because ? I don't,and my friends have some pretty badass stuff that fits all of the "assault style" definitions.

Okay, let me pause for long enough to say this. We've never met but over the months that I've been following this thread I've gotten a pretty good feel for where the regular contributors register with their opinions. I agree with the vast majority of your points on almost all subjects. That said, I was a bit surprised that you are seemingly fine with all the restrictions. I wasn't "calling you out", just looking for clarification from a Californian. The laws there are ridiculous and I've watched both Oregon and Washington try to out-do Kali over the last few years. Its the same old "sensible, common sense, safety, emergency" labled bullshit and I've had enough. So I left.

Truthfully, my Datsun is probably more likely to kill someone than any of my guns -- if I had any, that is.

Do I need "high capacity" mags? Probably not, but I'd like the freedom to own them. Do I need to "stockpile for the apocalype"? Probably not, but I'd like the freedom to go into a store and buy a brick of .22 without a background check and a fee. Do I personally know anyone who has had their guns taken away "just because"? No, but I know someone who did due to false accusations and it took him years and thousands of dollars to get it squared away.

Starting in 2018 in NY:

1d2h.png

Want to fix the problem of companies employing "undocumented workers"? Take away the incentive of lower wages, non-complaining workers, etc.. from the company.

1000$ a day fine to the company per person if you employ someone who is not here legally.

1 month grace period to redo background checks and a finders fee for people who report a company employing illegals.

Would solve the issue very quickly.

And to those who would call me an asshole and heartless for suggesting this? I don't give a flying fuck about your feelings.

I'm fucking done with all this bullshit.
