datzenmike
It used to be that every dollar was backed by an equal amount of gold. Gold was separated from currency in the mid '30s. Before that you could ask for your dollar's worth in gold. After, it was illegal to own gold. It changes around all the time. 2 Link to comment
VFR800
Illegal to own gold ey? Back then and all the way through to now (in USA)? People here in AUS use it as an investment option. Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
You can own gold here in the states, shit you can mine it if you have the means. 3 Link to comment

thisismatt
"Yes, in this country, from 1933 to 1974 it was illegal for U.S. citizens to own gold in the form of gold bullion, without a special license. On January 1, 1975, these restrictions were lifted and gold can now be freely held in the U. S. without any licensing or restrictions of any kind." 3 Link to comment
a.d._510_n_ok
good old FDR. and yes once upon a time there was American currency marked as a gold or silver certificate. you could take those bills to a bank and trade for the denomination's worth in the respective precious metal. bonus food for thought: American "silver" coins were given a copper core after '64 and are known as "sandwich coins". That's why a '65 and newer quarter has a brown stripe on the edge and older coins do not. In '64 a quarter was worth 25¢ in silver. Quarters minted after '64 lost much of their metal value and their government kept the change. 3 Link to comment

Before that you could ask for your dollar's worth in gold. After, it was illegal to own gold. It changes around all the time. Actually there were 3 kinds of US paper currency in circulation aside from Gold and silver coins [plus minor coinage of copper, nickle and silver blends]. There were Silver Certificates designated by a Blue treasury seal, redeemable in silver on demand. Then there were US Notes certificates with red treasury seals designated as legal for all debts public and private And by careful folding to a taxi driver the message "gal tender and private".. Then there were Treasury notes designated by Green treasury seals. I haven't the faintest notion that they were backed by more than a printing press. i have old samples of all three variants including the original [horse gamblers paid off] $2 bill, not the one with the abbreviated Declaration of Independence edited painting of the signning of the Declaration of Independence which eliminated the Delaware deligation! Most original $2 bills will be found with a corner torn off as gamblers considered these bills to be bad luck! 1 Link to comment
MikeRL411
By the way! The initial issuance of US dollars to the GIs after the Invasion of Europe was a limited reissue of the recinded Gold Standard paper currency per my WW2 Uncle! Rapidly recalled! Link to comment
