Wrong!, Stop blaming sugar for diabetes, if you stuff your face with sugar every day and don't exercise, guess what???

Stop demonization of products and go to the source of the problem, lazyness, it's ridiculous to blame sugar for what is clearly a lazy problem.

You will always be free to state your opinion, but please educate yourself before you accidentally mis-inform someone else. Diet is essential. And I won't say it's a lesser issue. But once again, you point out a differing issue to negate the stated issue. It in no way negates the issue of diet. Both are critical for health, and both are lacking. Health insurance rates drop for people who excersize regularly. Major junk food is another contributor to our society's poor health. In my opinion, taxing these items makes more sense than income.

Actually diabetes is hereditary, too much glocuse or sugar, lack of exercise, not eating enough of the right foods that are filled with vitamins and the right nutrients can trigger it and one can become insulin resistant. I know because i have been for the last 3 years. Sure one can blame the food industry but what about personal responsibility and as a responsible parent you have control what you buy for your kids.

The difference between type 1 and type two diabetes.

Also, blaming the food industry is one thing. Taxing goods is another. Taxes help pay for the ramifications. In this instance, I'd say taxing soda to help cover the issues of bad diet will both help cures, and reduce the issues. Chose appropriate taxes, get rid of inappropriate taxes. As long as we have war, we will have to pay taxes

Again, your solution is to steal money from people and have your beloved failure of a government "fund care to those who need it" I really want to insult you here, really badly......How do I gently do this.....fuck!.... Uhm.....Ok, ok, I think I figured it out....Just fucking blow my head off!

You would have to tax soda 300% to make up for the medical costs associated with the crap. Same with Cigarettes.

Now that weed is legal they should tax that too to compensate for all the zombies it will create that will cost society billions.

Im an exception.

It does not matter if there's a war or not the govt will always tax us. Are u certain that the soda tax will fund the right cause or is it another sneaky way of the govt.To fill up their coffers? The govt. Is so wasteful, just look at how much the f35 cost and it is plagued with so many issues or what about the bridge to nowhere or what about those council members in Bell Gardens. Getting paid like 400k a year, if i remember correctly, now cigarettes are 2 dollars more...what's next they will tax us for how many miles we drive, wait a minute they are already piloting that boondoggle. Why did we get into a war with England, taxes..hello! People are getting tired of being taxed, plain and simple. Another example is my county hired a consulting firm and paid them millions to improve their logo and come up with an effective plan to market govt services to its residence. With their webpage, it clearly states the services they provide and how can a logo help them in becoming a better bureaucrat...word has it they hired the consulting firm without going through bidding process...so what is that telling you? Its not coming out of their pockets so why would they care.

As I'd already mentioned previously, but I'll re-iterate to prevent you're self termination. My acceptance of such a tax is balanced with a reduction in income tax (a far more unjust taxation), and the care for people who are uninsured, and don't treat themselves until they almost die and end up in an ER where they must treat, then subsequently bill the taxpayers for the care. That is how it is, has been our entire life, and will remain I'm certain. If I were trying to estimate a conservative response, id expect it would be inline with this. I think you are responding with bias because you've grown accustomed to opposing my views. That's okay, just don't pull the trigger. I'd hate to lose you as a face of my opposition. It's somehow quite validating.

Your frustration is certainly shared. The tea party I believe you are referencing was over taxation without representation. Not taxes in general. Income tax is the prime example. All tax initiatives are drafted to designate a source of funds, and a direction of funds. AKA representation. Aside from income tax, corporate tax, property tax, estate tax, bond revenue, and a few other big ticket items. The goods taxes are better. Car registration (tax) goes to roads infrastructure, etc. Unfortunately, as you intimated, the government can redirect these revenues. Tobacco tax is a prime example. When the economy tanks, the general fund sinks and the government either increases taxes, goes into default, or redirects revenue from non essential programs to the general fund. AKA they lay off and kill unnecessary programs instead of increasing taxes. This is exactly what the right calls for, but it can also be translated as misuse of tax revenue, because that tax revenue was earmarked for sensation programs, and anti smoking campaigns etc. now it's being used to keep a dam from cracking, or a VA center running. It's not simple. And the government sucks at being perfect. But the only companies that run well through hard times, are companies that pull in WAAY more than they need to operate. And our government will never be permitted to run rich. People will always fight to get more for less.

Professor...no need to educate me about taxes. In very familiar with how taxes work plus I'm very familiar with how the government works...been working for the govt. For almost 17 years. Lots of waste. Friends wife is nurse at a govt run hospital and would constantly talk about how wasteful they are.

All the "Good For You" taxes only benefit those who write the laws.

Do we really think, especially here in Shitfornia, that paying for our shopping bags will reduce pollution when the rest of the world is still polluting?

Have smokers stopped smoking by raising the cost of a pack of smokes?

Will people really stop drinking large drinks because the bumped up the tax on it?

DId we start driving less when they hiked gas tax to fix the roads? Did they ever fix the roads?

And now they are going to Tax Ammo by making us get a purchase permit. Make us pay to register our guns, again! All in the name of safety?

What the fuck ever happened to Freedom of Choice and Self Responsibility?

Tr8er, you wrote, promote less consumer and increase purchases that are not disposable...how will u accomplish this considering that our society is so materialistic and consumer driven? Most products that u buy on line or at the store are not meant to last. They are meant to be disposable. Who will promote less consumerism? The government? Heck they are in bed with major corporations and want u to spend ur money so that they can get taxes. Did u ever notice FDA, food drug administration, why are they together? Isn't one supposed to oversee the other? Being Don Quixote about how the world should be is a losing battle, specially if the vast majority of our society is materialistic. I hear u though because as a get older i realized the importance of simplicity and thrift but I can't expect my friends or family to hear the same drum as i do because they have different values. After all, that's what this thread about, right? People having different values and opinions, but it does not mean, I'm right or ur right.

"Yale grad students' 'hunger strike' apparently involves eating when hungry

A group of Yale University graduate students announced Tuesday evening that they would be undertaking a hunger strike to pressure the administration into granting them better union benefits Yale doctoral students currently earn a stipend $30,000 a year, receive free health care, and have their $40,000 tuition paid in full, according to Yale News

As it turns out, the hunger strike might not put anyone's health in peril. According to a pamphlet posted on Twitter by a  former Yale student, the hunger strike is "symbolic" and protesters can leave and get food when they can no longer go on."

Hey now I am the real Mattndew!!

It's amazing how much our representative syphon tax money into their own pockets. *Cough cough* california highway money *cough cough*  I bet if they audited Epelosy, Boxer, and Moon Beam's private enterprises they would find a portion of the missing billions of federal tax money designated for roads and infrastructure.

We have a system designed to launder working money into the accounts of the shysters blowing sunshine up our asses. Why else do these turds go into office with modest upper level wealth and retire with top 10% financial standing?

It absolutely absurd.

So no amount of sound reasoning as to why we need to increase taxes will ever sway me into saying yes to a levy.  To get into office is as equal to winning the lottery for these fuckers.

Fuck taxes. Fuck taxing treats like soda. Manage the trillions brought in already or go get dry fucked.

My cynical side agrees that we are hopeless. But the little optimist in me figures I'm not going to hinder an effort move in the right direction. I do think we can tax the shit out of cheap Chinese copies to make them price comparative to quality products. People will more often buy the quality product. Less landfill, less repeat purchases, more money in the pockets of the consumer long run. They buy cheap, because it's cheap. Taxes can fix that. Do I necessarily want legislators acting as social engineers? No. But id also like to do something good If we have to pay them
