Take the shifter boot off to get a good look down there. Is the shifter sloppy? There are plastic bushings that wear and can fall out, shifter is all over the place and you have to 'hunt' for the gears. Is the carpet, console, shifter dust boot or sheet metal in the way of the shift lever?

The clutch is the same clutch for the other gears too. But you could shut the engine off and place in first then start and let the clutch out to see if it went into gear. If it isn't in the shift linkage the roll pin in the 1st/2nd shift fork may have broken. The shift rod moves forward and back but the fork doesn't. Lets hope it's the shifter.

Middle shift rod you can see the small roll pin in the shift fork. This is the 3rd/4th fork but easier to see. The 1st/2nd is the top one to the left. The roll pin holds the fork to the shift rod so it can move back 3rd, and forward 4th. First to second is the most common shift and also the hardest when in a hurry.
