L20b won't idle

Recommended Posts

Ok so the only way I have been able to drive the car is to A.) have my foot on the gas enough to keep it running or B.) turn the idle screw in a lot. I looked at the bulls eye on the carb and it's 2 or 3 mm off the center. Also I have tried to mess with the mixture screw but I can put it all the way in (kills the engine) then all the way out and nothing changes. When I start it cold it will idle till I press the gas then it won't idle and it will just die. When I try to start it again it won't turn over until I press the gas to the floor. What is going on??? I have all the vacuum lines on.

Listen near the back of the carb and have someone turn the key on off on off (don't start) You should hear a light clicking noise. This is the idle cut solenoid used on all L20B carbs to prevent run on. Basically an electric valve that shuts off fuel to the idle circuit when the key is turned off. If no clicking then it's not opening and letting gas through.

It's the hex shaped thing with the red wire in this picture...

If it's there but not clicking perhaps there is no power to it.

There is no idle jet as such. There is an idle circuit with a screw that adjusts the amount of gas. This is the idle mixture screw that you adjusted. It may be part blocked.

Bear with me. If the idle cut is working, carefully remove it. Don't loose the spring and washer inside. Get a can of carb spray, the one with the straw like the WD-40  can. Direct into the hole and give a good spray. Don't get in eyes. Now unscrew the idle mixture screw, (count turns) don't loose the spring. Spray into this hole also. Replace everything. This should rinse out the idle circuit, was cheap and most of all was easy. Try it.

DAMN IT!!!! Nothing like getting carb cleaner on your glasses and having the feeling your eye brows are on fire! I cleaned it all ( you don't know how hard it was to be able to spray the cleaner in the mixture screw hole) I'll try to start it in the morning. Thanks!
