cjzeppy's 521 ... a rust bucket in the rust belt.

Hello everyone. Been apart of Ratsun for over 2 years, and I just got another Datto this morning. Picked up a 1969 521 for $500 in VA off of craigslist. The posting was only hours old, and I immediatley contacted the owner for more information. Drove 2 hours just to look at the truck, and make a down payment. And now I finally scrapped another vehicle to buy and make room for this truck. Hope to have more updates soon, but for right now it's sitting while I continue building my garage.

How many speed is the wiper motor, 1 or 2 speed?

Pull the switch, one or 2 clicks?

There are lot of things I am wondering about on your truck, it has the 68 taillights, it has the 520 instrument cluster and 4 way knob, but it has the 521 dash top.

To bad your not closer, I have the rear clip you need to fix all that frame rust.

Could it be an early '69 model with the 68/520 parts? I've seen it done on other makes where they stuff the previous model parts on the next model.

It's hard to say how all that stuff ended up on your truck, I suspect the instrument cluster was put there because something broke on the original, same with the red 4 way knob, people just want them red knobs, the taillights are an early thing though, I don't know if 69 models had them taillights, but the very early 521 models likely made and sold in 1968 did have them taillights, some on here will argue that there is no 1968 521, it's just a 69 model year sold in 1968, so be it, then there is no 1967 1/2 Datsun 2000 roadster, they are all just 68 models sold in 67, but the title likely says they are 1967 cars, not 1967 1/2 cars.

Only 520s have amber turn signal indicators, that is not entirely true, 411s also had amber indicators, the 521s all have green turn signal indicators in the instrument clusters.

Thanks, I didn't realize that.  I'll have to check my 69 to see what color they are...

Sorry that this new post isn't very active. I'm in between rebuilding a garage at my parents house that will be the home of my sunny. Right now I have the left side and rear walls finished. I'm hoping to have the rest of the walls built this month, and then begin the teardown on the the truck.

That cluster matches what came stock in 1 1965 520 and 2 1966 520s I have owned over the years.  I have owned a 68 521 and the instrument cluster had green indicators I bought this truck in 1978 from the original owner.  All the 521s I have owned have had green indicator lights.

I am not sure but the first 2 numbers of your VIN are 67, is this the year of manufacture?  If this is true this would be a 671/2 should be titled as a 1968. Unless it was not sold new until a later year.  Some of the Datsuns in the early years at the smaller dealerships could sit new unsold in small towns.

Please post a picture of the fuel door so I can see the full shape of it.

So my car should be registered as a 68? and I can take a picture of the gas door tomorrow when there's light out. Thanks for the information Charlie.

Looked at a 67 520 on Friday that had green indicator lights.  This is the earliest truck I have seen the green turn indicator lights in.  It also had the 521 style gas door.

The gas door on the left is the 65/66 520 style door.  The one on the right is the later 67-72 520 521 fuel door.

It is easy to change an instrument cluster out if the one in the truck is broke, the 520 may have a 521 cluster and box.

These trucks get what ever is available installed in them to keep them on the road, all mine have 520 clusters in them at the moment, I like them because I can see the turn signals blink when the sun hits the dash, I cannot see the green turn signals blink under the same circumstances.

One step closer to wrenching on the truck. Past few weeks I've been slowly framing and installing metal siding on the front wall. I'm waiting to get paid for a side job at work to purchase a garage door. But for now a tarp and some duct tape works. Just need to hang some lights and buy a torpedo heater before I start tearing apart the truck. Hoping its soon because I have a deadline set to debut the truck at the end of February.
