Recommended Posts

So, I own a 260z, and when i bought it, the previous owner had a 240z dash installed. Car ran. i then bought the correct dash, and the correct wiring for it. but, now the car only turns over if i hold the key in a certain position. if i realese it, its shuts off. i didnt change the ognition switch. till later, and the new one did the same thing. idk what it could be. anyone encounter this problem before.

You say the engine turns over but do you mean it just cranks over or that is starts?

If started and you release the key it shuts off?

If this is the case it might be worth checking the ballast resistor near the coil. If is not connected or is broken internally the engine will only fire when cranking the starter and will immediately shut off when the key is released.

The ballast resister is the white ceramic thing marker RESISTER on it just above the coil. Yours will be similar.

Get a short length of insulated wire, bare the ends and connect across those two terminals. If the car starts and keeps running this is the problem. Do NOT run the car for any length of time with this jumper wire on. This is just a test. If the ballast resister proves the problem you will need to replace it.
