edekalil
Wondering what solution anyone has for I guess is trash or junk coming from the tank causing the car to run bad or quit. I have heard of places that can boil or clean out the tank kinda like a radiator shop does but they go a step further by coating the inside of the tank to prevent any rust. I think most of my problems are old fuel that had sat in the tank for so long and went bad. Now I believe the bad residue is flaking loose and traveling to the carb. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
This is what the fuel filter is for. There is also a brass screen in the banjo fitting on the carb. If it can get past those it will pass through any jet. I had a rusty tank on my 710. I removed it and drained it out into a pail. Removed the sender and added several handfuls of clean drive way gravel. Sloshed it around to loosen any rust, emptied it out, rinsed with a garden hose and let dry. New filter and that was 4 years ago, runs just fine now. Gravity fed the dirty redish/brown gas through an old filter and look how clean it became... This is what was flushed out of the tank just by emptying it... Quote Link to comment
edekalil
Yea I have those filters on the car, I guess I will have to take off some time to pull the tank out and drain and flush it out. Then see how it go's. Thanks for the info. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well the gas looked like brick colored primer. Had to take the filter off twice in 80 miles and shake the crud out of it to get it home when I picked it up. Put a new one on and it plugged in a week... so I knew it was time. Well you can see what was in the tank. 1 Quote Link to comment
Rjawm
I've wondered if these kits are worth the effort, and really any cheaper in the end, than just paying a shop to do the work. http://www.por15.com/POR-15-Fuel-Tank-Repair-Kit_p_62.html http://www.summitracing.com/parts/poi-49239?seid=srese1&gclid=COil8ZuSur8CFdFafgodAKsAmQ Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
What good timing, I need to clean up a tank for my 77 620. I too would like to know if anyone has used tank sealer and how well it worked. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I've heard it depends on how well you prep the tank. Has to be spotless. I think there is a cleaner/etcher to get rid of the old rust and scale. Mix or maybe pour in the lining and rotate the tank to coat the inside thoroughly. Done right it's permanent and cheaper than a new one. I think the liner is also good for sealing pin holes. Quote Link to comment

yellowdatsun
POR products are good stuff, just make sure you follow the directions and you'll be fine. BUT, there's something to be said about just taking it to a shop and have them do all the work. Quote Link to comment
q-tip
I've heard a few bad stories about the tank sealer, but now personal experience. To clean the tank out in with mike but I used some nuts and bolts instead of the gravel, I've used gravel too, but work about the same Quote Link to comment
Draker
I pressure washed my tank installed it... finally got around to driving it a few months ago. Pushed it home twice. Removed tank 2 weeks ago put some nuts and bolts in there and sloshed it around like a mofo. Cleaned it out really well actually.. but the baffles in there make it a little tough. I mainly focused on getting the bottom clean. We'll see... I'm interested in this topic as well. Considering both options, pro or DIY if this tank still has a bunch of shit clogging the pickup tube. I am thinking any debris now will be small enough to pass through the pickup tube and make it into the filter I have in the trunk. I'm running two inline filters. One glass/cleanable filter in the trunk and the stock on in the engine bay. Quote Link to comment
