L20B engine with 720 5 speed tranny?

it's possible run a L20B engine with a '84 nissan 720 5 speed transmission?

The L series L20B engine is tilted about 12 degrees over to the right of vertical. The Z series (720 engine) is tilted to the left a similar amount. If you force the L engine and the Z 5 speed together the shifter will be almost 20 degrees leaning  into the passenger's hip. The transmission mount won't sit level at all.

 

The thing to do is swap the front case from an L series 4 or 5 speed (with the correct L series lean) onto the 720 transmission.

 

 

This assumes that the '84 720 in Puerto Rico was a Z24 engine

The rubber engine mounts and the transmission rubber mounts will either not line up or will fight each other and tear out. Do you have a 4 or 5 speed from an L series engine? Doesn't have to work, all you want is the case.

No way of knowing how difficult. Anything can be done with time, money, welder and some fab skills.

Looks like a '73 610 and he has an L20B motor in it. L20Bs came out in '75 so either it was swapped in or he plans to swap it in.

 

The 610 came with a 31.5" long 4 speed or an automatic.

 

The '84 720 came with a 31.5" 71B 5 speed. (but there were 26" shortys too) Aside from it being for an Z series motor, it would fit without having to shorten the driveshaft.

Anything is possible. But first measure the length of the 720 5 speed. It has to be 31.5"

 

This part...

 

... comes with different bolt patterns on the right side so it can be bolted to several different engine types. The 720 transmission has a Z series bolt pattern. In order for it to bolt up to an L series L20B engine you will need to remove the Z series front case and swap an L series front case on.

Once an L series case is bolted on it will bolt to your L20B and be the correct length to fit your '72 610 without having to shorten the driveshaft. You WILL have to modify the rear cross member where the transmission mount connects..

It won't fit correctly.  There are 4 things that are critical:

 

1) Bolts to engine.   Yes, it will

2) Is the right length.  It might be, but only if it's the long version

3) Has the right mount location.  Probably not.  The 610 used a 63-series transmission, the 720 used a 71-series transmission, and the mount point could be in the wrong place.

4) Has the right orientation.  It does not.  It is approximately 20 degrees offset., which means the trans crossmember would be at an angle, and the shifter would be offset by that much to the passenger side.

 

To correct #3, you;ll need to make a custom crossmember.  To correct #4, you'll need a 71B  L-series (not Z-series) transmission front case.  Which likely in your situation, requires buying another transmission.

Maybe this will help ,, it is to switch bellhousing from long tail to short but it is still just,,  L motor bellhousing onto 720 Z motor trans.

So if he just ignores it says short tail it should be what he needs?
