Aftermarket wheels on an 84 maxima

Hey guys, I am in the process of figuring out what size wheels I want on my 84 maxima.  The car will be lowered at some point so that will need to be taken into consideration.  Does anyone know the offset of the stock 14" maxima wheels?  The wheels that I am interested in are 15", either 15x7 +38 or 15x8 +25.  I am thinking I would like to put the 15x7's on the front and 15x8's on the rear if they will fit.  I would rather not run a spacer.  Can anyone help me out?  Will these fit?  I know people run 15" 280z wheels on their maximas but I don't know how wided those wheels are and what the offset is.  I have a fender roller so I plan on rolling the fenders if I need to.

I don't think they will. Pretty sure that I had Konig Rewinds in 15 X 7 0 offset wheels on my 910 and they fit perfectly. Picture:

I'm a little bit confused.  You say you don't think they will fit but then you say you are running an even more agressive offset than what I am talking about and your wheels do fit?  Were you running 15x7's 0et all the way around?

These are 15x6.5 +27 with a 205/55-15. As you can see, that's a fairly conservative fit, and no fender rolling or spacers were needed.

If you don't want spacers, a slightly more aggressive offset would be better. Either of those are likely to need spacers on the front. Probably not on the rear.

I just ordered the wheels in these specs.  For the rear I am going with 15x8 +25 and in the front I am going with 15x7 +38.  Now, does anyone know the center bore of the 1st gen Maxima?  I want to go ahead and order centering ring.  Thanks guys.

Hub-centric rings won't do you much good. Up front you'll need spacers or adapters to fit those wheels anyway. Maybe get some adapters made that are hub-centric?

Mid-90s Nissan Quest rear studs will be 10mm longer than what you have, netting you maybe up to a 12mm spacer.

 

If you want really long (because racecar), the ARP #100-7708 is 2.5" long and fits with no fuss.

The Quest studs are the same M12x1.25  thread, at 45mm long.

I know that people have run a 7" wide wheel on the front of a maxima but with a lower offset (+24) with out rubbing issues so I am hoping the most I would need would be a 10 mm spacer.  Are the rear Quest studs the same knurl diameter as my front maxima studs?  I am pretty sure I will be fine in the rear with no spacer, the only place I might need them is in the front.

Quest studs have the same knurl as most all RWD & Truck/SUV. Look for a 12.83mm to 12.90mm knurl diameter.

 

1984 Maxima front studs are 32mm long x 12.83mm knurl, Dorman P/N 610-240

1984 Maxima rears are 41.5mm long x  12.83mm knurl, Dorman P/N 610-320

 

1993-1998 Quest rears are 45.5mm long x 12.90mm knurl, Dorman P/N 610-403

According to advanced auto, your specs on the Quest are correct, but it shows the maxima front stud knurl diameter is 13.00.  If this is true then with the Quest studs being .10mm skinnier will that cause and issue?  Do they need to be the exact size?  Will they "bite" in their bore holes??

You are correct on the 610-240 knurl, my mistake. The Dorman site does says they are 13.00mm.

 

Ironically the studs are the same, front & rear for a 510

 

For years 510 guys have been swapping the longer 610-320 x 12.83mm knurl rears into the front hubs with no problems (I've even done it on my racecar), so I wouldn't see any issue with using the 12.90mm Quest stud front or rear.

 

If you are nervous about the size difference, use some stud & bearing mount Loctite as an added extra precaution.

The wheels are supposed to be coming in tomorrow, so once I figure out what size tires I want to run I can figure out if I am going to need spacers in the front.  Can anyone help to recommend tires?  I want something to fit so that the sidewall is mostly flat, and I do not want a super tall tire or really low profile tire, I am thinking some where around a 45 or 50 would work well.  The wheels are 15x7 and 15x8, I am thinking of a 195 or 205 for the 15x7 and either a 215 or 225 for the 15x8.  Opinions?

I ended up going with 195/60/15 in the front and 215/60/15 in the rear.  I have not tried to put them on the car yet, but I will post back when I do.

I've already lowered it on 280zx springs and kyb struts.  I have a fender roller so I can help "make" room towards the outside.  I just had knee surgery so I am out of commission for a little while, I will try fitting everything when I am back up and moving around.

So I finally had time to put my wheels on.  They do fit but they required some work.  In the front the tires clear the strut by a very few mm's, but I am afraid that when the tire flexes it will rub the strut so I am going to put a 10mm spacer on the front.  I went ahead and ordered the 50mm wheel studs that I posted earlier in post 13.  As for the rear I had plenty of room inward but I realized that I needed to roll the fenders, so I had to remove the chrome fender arch garnish.  Here are a few pictures, I am not going to drive it until I have added the spacers in the front.

Honestly, I'd run the spacers based on looks alone. Your rears are very flush while the fronts are very "sunk". 

 

I have had an issue when driving "spiritedly" that wheels with only 2-3mm clearance they would flex just enough to rub the strut, so you're spot on there.

yeah, I agree with the look aspect too.  I am still waiting on my studs to ship, I followed up today with the company and they said the studs should ship today.  I'll update the thread once I get the stuff on.
