Datsun Metal Shaping - Automotive Panel Craft

Recommended Posts

Thought we might start this thread for those interested in metal shaping.

We will kick this thread off with a Full Rear Quarter Panel for a Datsun Roadster. This is the panel that was needed to be replicated.

Work began by taking a template from a Datsun Roadster then marking it out on the steel. (1mm cold rolled mild steel)

Cutting with nibbler and roughly trimming panel to size.

After several hours of intense shaping in the english wheel, our flat piece of steel has started to take shape and is matched up against the original. This happens several times during the English Wheel process.

After the English Wheeling is done, its time to start on the wheel arch.

The Wheel Arch is beaten out with a blocking hammer.

Wheel Arch has been shrunken down then run through the bead roller to sharpen up the edge.

It also goes through the shrinker to pull the flange back down.

If you ever want to see if something is truely straight, symmetrical or identical try turning your back and viewing it through a mirror, its like a new set of eyeballs. An old sculptor taught me this trick and now can't live without it.

Thanks for following this restoration. Leave us your thoughts and tell us what other Datsun's you'd like to see the metal shaping on.
