FS5W71C trans swap question

So im in the middle of doing the 240sx FS5W71C trans swap on my 84 max by swapping a 280zx front bellhousing.,

i've read everything and i understand jist of it, but i was wondering is the boss on the backside of the housing that has to be milled, is it a thrust surface? my machinist (by hand) ground down the boss in the diameter needed to avoid the countershaft gear, but didnt bother worrying about exact clearance. i so i want to be 100% sure if it had to be machined perfect or not...
