family200
I got this 320 today. I have wanted one since around 1993 when I saw one in Bellingham. It is rough, there is a little bit floor left in it. I need to get rid of the horrible wheels and tires very soon! Maybe Friday. I can't tell what engine is in it. It has the column shift gauge bezel, with a hacked in floor shift tranny. The engine ID plate seems blank. It looks a lotlike my J15, but the exhaust manifold is different, and the generator too. Also Transmission shift area looks different from my J series. Anyone have any ideas what engine it is?Thanks. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
E1 engine - 1200 Is a 1965 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
It looks complete.. so that's a good thing! Quote Link to comment
wayno
Looks like an E1 to me also, tranny could be from a J series, but I don't know that, I suppose it could be a 4 speed that came on the later floor shift 65 models, but they had a different tunnel. Quote Link to comment
family200
Thanks guys! I am glad to hear that it is an E series. The transmission tunnel is really hacked up, and it doesn't look like my other J series trannys on the shifter part. I was just going off the ID tag for the year. Quote Link to comment
wayno
See just above the distributor, that is where the engine designation number is on the left, and the engine number is on the right, does your engine number match your VIN tag? Quote Link to comment
family200
I spent some time cleaning it, and I still don't see anything. My J15 is stamped really clear in the same area. Quote Link to comment
wayno
That's interesting, maybe it is a replacement block, I have seen an A series block with no marks before. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
320 floor shift gearboxes are completely different from 521 gearboxes, so the shifter is different. In addition to looking different, the input and output shafts are different. Quote Link to comment
Conner
The pie shaped front signal lenses suggest it is a 64. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Agreed. It is a 1964 The late E1 valve cover and floor shift are signs of a 1965. But since the tunnel is hacked, perhaps someone swapped the drivetrain. Maybe years ago. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Imagine trying to figure out what year MINE is. Dataplate says 64. Has a 63 grille, and a 65 engine and trans (floor shift). Floor is unhacked. It was put together from several trucks. Quote Link to comment
difrangia
Quite possible that the truk was built in 64 judging by the grille as others have stated. If so, it's also probable that it came with column shift and someone put the 320 series floor-shift trany in later. If you peel the floor mats back you should see that the removable transmission cover pan is what has been butchered. It is removable with a handfull of screws. All you need to do is find a '65 floor-shift tranny pan and change it out with the butchered one. As you said, the truk has the column-shift gage bezel. There are possibly some of the column shift linkage mount points, linkage, and such still under the truck. I'm in the process of converting mine from column-shift to floor-shift and have been researching this for a bit. Steve Quote Link to comment
family200
The guy that I got this truck from sent to his friends house to look at another one. This is what was there. The frame is bent. The glass looks good except for a couple rock dings. It has a Ford Courier rear end in it. The grill, door handles, and molding look pretty good. Later engine with a 5 speed. It's not for me, but I think he is ready to sale it. He wouldn't say what he was hoping to get for it. He also told me that the original rear end from this 1960 truck is in my 1964. Is that pretty similar to what the 1964 came with? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
That 222 has an A-series engine in it. If the 222 rear end is in the 320, that'll be a 5.1:1 or so gear ratio, vs the 4.88 that most 320s had. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Its a 1981-1982 engine. Probably seized by now The 5-speed is worth a lot if it turns smoothly Quote Link to comment
vindats1
Your generator looks like it could be a Delco, often replacing the stock generator if it could not be found. Quote Link to comment
Conner
Are those Delco generators available anywhere? I need to replace my generator and I'd rather stay as close to stock as I can. Quote Link to comment
