KA24DE Knock Sensor (Code 34) -- FREE REPLACEMENT

Just finished replacing my knock sensor due to a "code 34, Knock Sensor circuit". (Please refer to link: http://www.ka24development.com/ecu_codes.html ) on how to retrieve codes.

 

I took a look at the KS and low-and-behold ....

The KS had actually broken at the connector... weird! I took a look at the sensor and it appeared to be a cheapo aftermarket and looked like it was partially melted!

Anyway, I called O'reillys and the said a new sensor was $122.99! WHAT THE F*CK!? I then decided to get crafty and cross reference the sensor to other Nissan engines... I came up with this info:

This is a long list to go through, but to make it short.... GA16DE, SR20DE (FWD), KA24DE, VG30DE(T), VH45DE all share the same knock sensor regardless of FWD or RWD EXCEPT SR20DET AND KA24E (SINGLE CAM) WILL NOT WORK.

 

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING THE FWD SR20DE SENSOR FOUND IN THE G20 / SENTRA SE-R!! It is extremely easy to remove, only requiring a 12MM wrench....

 

To remove the "new" sensor, be careful as the can break them... lay under the car and look on the back side of the block, under the intake manifold, just above the CV axle... can be seen here:

Remove the sensor, and CAREFULLY inspect. It should be clean, un-cracked and corrosion free. Check to see if there is any "cracked, peeling plastic." If you have any of these concerns, do not use it.. on to the next car.

Remove you're KA24DE sensor and now install the new SR20DE sensor. Clear codes (refer to link above) and test drive. Re-check codes.

those barely make it out of warranty as it is, doubt you will get 6 months out of a used up one 

 

ain't that the truth... holy hell! i'm actually finding out that Nissan's had a huge issue with their knock sensors...

Yup.  Went through this with my KA... spent a lot of time trying to make code 34 go away.  We've narrowed it down to either the ecu, or the actual wire going from the knock sensor to the ECU.

So, I've been reading that at the Nissan dealership back in the day they would also replace the KS sub harness assy. when knock sensor was replaced. They like to be brittle!

 

That little 11" pigtail is around $50 from what I read... after all you can just throw an ohmmeter across that little harness and be sure there is continuity between the connectors. 

 

I can almost guarantee the ECU wouldn't malfunction and only cause code 34. There would be additional, strange issues going on. Have you replaced the knock sensor? And if so, did you use one of those cheap $30 ones from eBay? If so, I've heard those are total junk. They can also be damaged in shipping!

 

If you haven't replaced the KS, do so. It's real easy. Requires a 10MM, 12MM, 12" extension, 3/8" ratchet, tape and a metal coat hanger. lol.

One thing Nissan did, not that they knew they had a problem with them or anything, even on obd II cars the knock sensor code p0325  won't turn the check engine light on. People normally only replace them when they fail emission testing for the code

Correct. But it does decrease power quite a bit with that code active ... which is a possibility why people say KA's are so slow lol. I think dual cams a re perfectly fine, honestly.

We tried two brand new knock sensors and replaced the knock sensor harness.    :hmm: Even tried wrapping it in a towel and running a ground to the block, which is how it's sitting right now.

Do you know for sure?  Here is a graph of my KA dyno with the ECU showing code 34 and speed sensor code.  There's no way a pretty much stock KA will make that kind of power if it's pulling timing...  that is to the wheels by the way.

I do not know for sure, no. But reading in the FSM how the sensor functions it would seem that it would retard timing to lower the chance of detonation, although i could definitely be wrong... I have been before. lol.

my 97 altima ks code loves to turn on, but its always been caused by some other failure. both my MAF and o2 senor set off the knock sensor, and then went away as soon as i replaced the problem sensors. 

 

 

as a side note, ive replaced a knock sensor on a fwd ka24de before and it is not an easy task, it is located in one of the hardest to reach places in the car, most shops will want to take off the manifolds to get to it. it can be reached from under the car, but it is garenteed to take awhile and cause a hand cramp
