wagon rear disc swap problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 72 510 wagon and trying to install rear disk set. I have 200sx brackets/calipers/rotors. I have read that this swap will work. the problem im having is that there is not enough Clarence between the rotor and bracket to bolt on the caliper. the bracket is angled towards the inside,  backing plate is completely removed by the way. So what am I doing wrong here??? the last shows the Clarence problem.

If you look at the pics in the 2nd response you will see that the brackets they sell are only put on with three bolts and notched to go onto the backside of the axle. It wont hurt to try it

Ah, got it, hard to see in the pictures. What about cutting a large notch out of the bracket so you can slip onto the axle and bolt on from the other side?

I did notch the bracket. its bolted by 3 bolt. looks like im gana modify the bracket by grinding off about 1/4in.

I had to do some grinding on mine, and if memory serves, I swapped out the guts of the caliper for some reason but I cannot recall.  My goon is buried in the garage right now or I would go look.  Maybe this weekend

Where have you read that this will work?  If it did, why would people be making caliper brackets for wagons? An option you may look into is a different rotor with a shorter I have read

I have read it in few places on the web. but cant get the full info pic are gone, links are dead, or the conversation never got finished, people make them because the 200sx brackets are hard to find soo its just easier to make there own. I was thinking about looking for a new rotor like you said.

Have you tried putting it on the back side of the housing?

haven't tried that but if do there would be nothing holding the axle in! lol the bracket holds it in place.

But its to late now it started to modify its my DD its been down this hole week and need it for work. I cut the ear lobes off going to mock the caliper and rotor in place and see how far back the ear lobs go then weld them back on. ill take some pics tomorrow

There should have been a cover over the bearing that bolts to axle and holds the axle in place, the bolts should go through it and then through the brackets on the back side of the axle

do your bolts thread into the bracket or caliper like this?

bolts just like the pic

Mark Grimsley was one of the first to do this swap. It is fully documented in the back issues of the Dime Quarterly. Volume 11 Issue 1.

It is available online here.

I hope this helps.

wow nice link!! so I just found out I have a AUTOMATIC diff . so he modify the ears by grinding them thinner I just ended up cutting shifted back the amount he grinded.

Rear axle assembly is identical on 510 for both automatic and manual equipped wagons.

no its not. 510 wagons have slight variations at the housing ends on manual vs automatic axles. Like S110 h190 disc brake brackets don't fit automatic axles without slotting the mounting holes.
