Ruth - 1971 Datsun 521 1600

Recommended Posts

I am new to the Datsun world, and small cars in general as I am an offroad guy (current vehicle being an 86 Toyota Land Cruiser on 33s, locked and TBI 350 swapped) I recently picked up a Datsun Pickup from my Girlfriends parents for almost free and now im now on the road to getting her running for a DD when my Crawler breaks down. I am a mechanic and the truck is currently sitting at the shop I work at with some mismatched Toyota rims/tires for my truck from towing it 2 hours to get it there.

currently she has a fuel delivery issue, has not been run in ~5-10 years and needs slave cylinder replacement/rebuild and brakes work done.

so to start off with

-does anyone have a fuel line diagram for the tank

-brake upgrades for the drums

-any other common problems/fixes?

There will be a fuel line to the pump and a vent for fumes to the driver's side and connected to the crankcase PCV valve system. There is also a smaller tank above the main gas tank for collecting and condensing fumes that are allowed to drip back into the main tank. It's a complex and confusing octopus of hoses that leak.

Type in disc brakes for 521 in our search engine (upper right of page) andlook for Mklotz70 or BEEBANI who make conversion parts.

thanks, I will get right on it. got her cranked over today at work with some gas, a jump from my pig and a little jiggling with the shifter.

next question

how much slop is in these transmission linkages? currently I can shift into 1st but the shifter then can slide all the way over to the third gear section and the same in the 2-4th section of the pattern. basically the shifter goes left to right like its in neutral not matter where its placed. reverse stays and has a spring to keep it from sliding in/out.

ill work on loading some pics of my yoter and of course the Datsun when I can

There is no filter, sock, or screen on the fuel pick up in the tank.  The tank has had 44 years to get crud in it, and this crud can get on the fuel pick up, and plug it.  The fuel pump should pump about a quart, at 1000 RPM, in a minute.  if it does not, try blowing air back from the fuel filter on the right front inner fender back to the gas tank.  Test fuel pump flow again.

This is the valve used on the gas tank, for evaporative emissions.   If you look close, you can see an "A", a  "F", and a "C" on the valve.  "A" goes to the underside of the Aircleaner.  "F" goes back to the fuel tank vapor separator, and "C" goes to the Crankcase.

thank you for that, ill be checking that out later today if I have time after we get the union pacific trucks serviced today.

got quoted for a clutch kit from our parts supplier for 130 on the high end but lower for my price since our shop has a business account with them.

for some reason this forum doesn't like my computer and wont embed a picture for me...

this forum layout is frustrating, every time I click into the text box to delete something it doesn't work and I end up hitting delete and it sends me back a page in my browser...

so much for photos since I cant seem to copy paste into these text boxes...

yep, my laptop is a bit funky at times so ill probably try on mobile to get some pictures up.

I haven't really had time to do anything to the Datsun lately but I will probably get the driveline reattached, pull the slave cylinder and tranny soon just so that I can get her rolling asap since I will probably need to move it by the end of the month somewhere at the shop as ill more than likely be moving over summer.

alright so clutch and slave cylinder are on the way tomorrow morning from our supplier. ill probably jump on that in the next week or so. I have a bunch of finals for college this week and next week so I am at the shop less and don't have as much free time when I finish my work projects

for those few people who want to know about my yota... axles are getting a cut and turn started to adjust the castor angle for my spring over

no updates...too busy at work to fix Datsun enough. some 225x65R15s are getting sourced for it. I have some spare chevy 15 steelies rolling around that will be slapped under her with the 225s. Corbeau seats are in my new houses garage and waiting on brackets to be fabbed and installed with some Land Cruiser seat slides that I have lying around. waiting on our interstate battery truck to drop off my damn battery...I swear they are worse than the snap-on truck. only reliable delivery for us is out metal and gas guy.

if it wasnt such a terrible idea I would throw my spare chevy 350 block in this thing just so I have all the same motor components in my parts bins.

haha yeah id love to make this truck go fast but I just need something that runs for a grocery getter while my DD and work truck is torn down at the shop...just need this one running and registered.

as for the rims, I am keeping all my tires on 15s so ill probably just store the stock dat tires since its a lot easier that way for me with my 3 other pairs of tires on 15s.

had a slow day at work and started tearing into Ruth between railroad trucks and a GMC. at the end of the day ended up getting the transmission most of the way out and its now sitting on the crossmember and torsion bars. I had to use an air hammer to break one of the carrier bearing bolts on the crossmember since it was spinning in the captured nut. other than that I dropped the oil pan and all the other bolts just slid right off thankfully since its been sitting for 10 years. gears all look good and the shifter engages without issue even with the large slop.

to physically pull the tranny I had to ditch the tranny jack because of the terrible design of a non removable crossmember and do the OSHA approved bench press method of sliding the tranny back while my boss used a floor jack on the bellhousing. this truck is a pain...I can pull yota 5 speed clutches faster than this with more electrical connectors and what not.

today I sat my butt down went fishing and swimming and forgot about work and the heat. back to the old turd on Tuesday with cleaning the transmission, slapping some paint on it and reinstalling.

only question I have is I found a small square hole about the size of a pencil eraser in the back of the transmission inside the gearbox area that appears to either be poor casting in the tranny or somewhere along the way it got hit with something. has anyone seen something like that? sorry for the lack of pictures, I still cant figure it out on my laptop and I don't have time

yes it had fluid, I drained the tranny then pulled the cover.

I have pictures just cant get this forum to post them for some reason.

I am a mechanic lol this truck is just turning into more of a pain than I originally thought it would be.

Do you have a photo hosting account like picasa or photobucket?

the only way I can post links is by manually typing it out. whenever I try to paste into the text box I get nothing showing up and the image button above the text box freezes on me whenever I hit OK.

What browser are you using?

What type of computer?

Can you email me a link to your photo account, or email me your photos as long as there are not to many?

Here is the only Datsun photo I could find under your name, it doesn't want me to post this photo from that site, I had to save it to my computer, then put it in my photo hosting site.

You need to open a photo hosting account, that was not a photo hosting site, that was a forum that allowed you to directly attach a photo, Ratsun doesn't allow that type of posting of photos.

I may not know what I am talking about, but it would not let me copy that photo and post it here, and the reason is likely that the photo is not hosted anywhere.

Also, a lot of folks have a lot of trouble with IE.
