77 Datsun 710 Project

Recommended Posts

This Datsun has been sitting in a barn for years....
Never has been worked on.

The carb is bad. I just ordered a weber for it.
I have questions on the suspension.

What shocks and or springs have you used, how do I lower the 710.
What is the bolt pattern, so I can buy some rims for it.
Anyone have any interior pieces, or are some interchangeable from other models?

I am a newbie. 21 years old, and this is my first project.
Any help would be great, thank you.

Welcome.

The bolt pattern is 4 x 4 1/2 or 4 x 114.3mm, this is the standard Datsun 4 lug pattern

I'm not a 710 guy but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to answer the rest your questions. I suggest posting some pics to wet their appetites. :)

Yeah, we gotta see pics ASAP! Here is the How-to Post Pics thing if you need it:

http://community.ratsun.net/topic/691-how-to-post-pictures-and-keep-online-photo-albums/

My current dream car is a 710 wagon, but I'm cheap and don't want to drive to the ends of the earth to find one, so I guess I'll keep dreaming for awhile longer. It is funny how there are a lot of Datsuns over here in the Spokane area, but you never see a 710. I've passed up a couple of 610 goons, cause I like 710s more.

Here is a starting point for suspension mods:

http://community.ratsun.net/topic/17682-my-island-74-710/page-3

This is page 3 of several pages, but I think this is where the suspension talk starts. This is for a wagon, but the front should be the same as any 710. For info on rear suspension, go to the "Project Datto" or 610/710 subheading under "Cars". You should find plenty of ideas to use up your time and money for a few months!  :D

Okay, now I'll sit back and wait for the pics.

I hope that the Weber transplant is a success and you can get it fired up again. Has it been sitting so long that the brakes and engine are frozen?

...getting rims and lowering it might be kinda "putting the cart before the horse." You might want to make sure that the basic stuff is repairable before you spend too much money on the suspension and rims/tires.

I don't want to rain on your parade here, but sometimes cars can get some nasty problems from sitting too long. ...though lots of times Datsuns come back to life with a bit of gas poured down the carb and a jump-start!

Oh, and welcome to the site - there aren't too many 710s left out there, but there are lots of 710 people on this site who would be happy to answer your questions and help you get another 710 back on the road.

Here is some inspirational reading:

A great thing to have is a factory service (not owner's) manual for you car. If you go to eBay and search for Datsun 710 factory service manual you will find several for not much money. The FSM has a whole lot of information not found in a Haynes or Chilton book. The other good book if you don't have a lot of experience with working on cars is "How to Keep Your Datsun Alive" http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&tn=how+to+keep+your+datsun+alive

You can find it on eBay too. Unfortunately, it isn't a common book, hence the $60 prices. I'd get the FSM first.

Thanks for all the information, I'll probably have the pics up tomorrow from Photobucket.
I am currently at work. Mine has the L20b with a 3sp automatic transmission.
The interior is shot.
I am going to strip it on Monday.
The door panels are salvageable.
The dash needs quite a bit of work.
The ignition system is setup to a start button.
Kind of strange, but it's been in the family for a long time.
Sat for like 10 years.

I don't know if you know what stale gas smells like if you take off the gas cap and give it a sniff. If the 710 sat that long, there is a good chance the gas isn't the best. Some Datsuns have a drain plug in the bottom of the tank, but I can't be sure about a 710. You can siphon out the old gas if there isn't a drain on the tank. One of my Datsuns I dumped some fresh gas in with the old gas thinking it would mix and be "good enough" to run. I ended up siphoning it all back out and putting in all fresh gas. I also had dried-out gas blocking the gas line from the tank to the fuel pump and had to spray carb cleaner in both ends of the line, let it soak, then blow out with compressed air. Did this a few times and the line was clear. But if your 710 was somewhere out of the sun all the years you may not have the same problems. I've heard the stories of Datsuns sitting for years and starting right up, but I don't know if that works here in E Washington.

If you have wiring to clean up, the FSM has easy to read wiring diagrams. Some of the FSM even have detailed diagrams for the different electrical systems which makes them easier to follow compared with the overall diagram for all the electrics.

Haha, it got the wrong carb on it - a 1-bbl. Datsuns come from the factory with a 2-bbl carb. The Weberis the way to go.

yeah - that carb looked really unfamiliar!

It doesn't look too bad - do you know why it was taken off the road in the first place?

Carb wasn't working right.

It has a Dodge Slant 6 single barrel carb on it.

Don't really know why haha.

I took out the gas tank, it was rusted out bad. Had a hole in it.

I stripped the trunk and I am working on getting all the rust removed.

Does anyone know what seats would fit in the back of the Datsun?
I was told 90's Honda Civic seats would, but I don't know.
I jutted the interior and trunk.
I am in the process of cleaning out all the rust of the trunk.
Also made some door panels for it with a black wrap

talk to redbanner if you can, not sure if he comes on here anymore but I know he still frequents nwdatsuns.com.  he's had several, and currently has, one of these 710 2doors, and is very knowledgeable about them, 710s are his favorite dattos.  and len, your dream car is a 710 goon, my wifes and mine is an f10...I have 2 710 goons, you have an f10....we need to talk :)

This sounds like a dangerous subject to discuss!  I could be talked out of my F10, but it may take a bit of work to make it roadworthy to get from here near Spokane to where you are. About 5 1/2 hours according to Google Maps. .I'll PM you a link to my Flickr page with lots of pics of my F10. It has some rust problems as you will see. Are your goons running? I've never gotten a running Datsun yet. I'm not sure I could bond with one without doing days of work on it first!
