heretic
put a dab of sealant at the block mating surface of cap & in the channel of the cap.. install the cap but only SNUG the bolts down DON'T torque... tap the plastic strips down into the channel on each side.... push the metal "shims" down into place on the block side of the plastic strips making sure the angled tip is down & angle side facing the bearing cap.... place all the remaining caps & follow the proper torque sequence.... post pics :) Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
That's what the chiltons book says. Nothing in it about the pins or strait seals so I winged it. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That's out of the '78 FSM and you're right. Have never seen a seal package without the small mettle strips. I found the rubber in first, and the strip carefully tapped down in behind it works best once the cap is in. Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
I put ultra grey on both strips of rubber pushed them till they bottomed out and the metal strips against the bearing cap. Is that going to effect it or should I be fine. Also I used Molly rings instead of iron. Just what was available to me. Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
Painted up a few more parts, a deep forest green mettalic for the valve cover, timing cover, alternator bracket, engine mount brackets, fuel pump block plate, and the inspection cover, crank pulley was painted gold metallic. I need to paint the wire holder for the valve cover gold, and im debating on painting the hose rail gold. Enjoy the photo dump. Its ready to install as soon as i can get annother engine hoist to borrow. 1 Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
On a side note the timing was set wrong so I tried to remove the coma gear to correct it and pop out goes the tensioner. So I pulled the riming cover off and I also found that I installed the oil thrower for the chain backwards so the oil pump gear beat it all to hell. Anyone got one of those laying around I could buy? And possibly a new timing cover. My insert pulled out when I removed the water pump again. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Also I used Molly rings instead of iron. Just what was available to me. If you have had the block bored and properly honed to the correct finish then chrome rings are really good as they have perfectly round and straight walls. If you simply honed the walls then cast iron are best. Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
OK i got my timing figured out, i put annother insert in the water pump mount but i need to find annother Oil Thrower as they call it in the service manuals. Anyone got a spare to part with? message me what youd like for it, or message me for my contact details, now i cant put this back together without it, or atleast i dont think i can. Its debatable. But as much money as i have tied up in this right now, i dont want it to fail down the road because i did not locate a new part. Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
Bought one from a member here. Project is at a stand still now till it arrives. Meantime I can relax for a few days and gather my plans on engine hoist and getting it moved from my living room back to the concrete platform on the far side of the property since everything is bolted on this time. Scoobs
While i wait on parts to come in, ive been thinking about what to do with my interior. Im thinking comfy caddi seats, tan leather. And a small stereo behind the seats wrapped in tan vinyl or suede. we shall see, need to get a new ignition lock and some door keys made, someone broke into the truck last weekend and stole my tools from the front seat and the new battery i had on the floorboard. So once its on the road again, windows are getting tinted dark Lol. Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
Got my part today i bought from member Xlr8r and was able to finish the engine. Now its ready to drop back in, but i have to re borrow a hoist and an extra set of hands. In the meantime, i bought a set of amber lenses for the high beams, i dont use the highbeams as i dont do much night driving, and when i do i use my suzuki swift due to custom made headlights. Anyway i like the look of the amber lights sooo much better on the front of this truck, also got some new pads installed, and greased all the joints. Enjoy some photos. 1 Quote Link to comment
mcordero8
Nice progress. Engine looks good. Are you going to paint the firewall well you have the engine out? Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
I wasn't planning on it. Lol Should i? I'm open to ideas. Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
Ran out of daylight by the time i got the seals replaced on the hoists cylinder, i did however get the engine stuck back in the bay, its resting on the mounts, tommorow morning comes the bolting together and getting it mated back up to the transmission. Maybe ill splurge and buy some oil to get a test fire in. 1 Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
I'm now understanding why i should have pulled both engine and transmission, i cannot for the life of me get this damn engine lined up with the transmission, this hoist im using does not have a leveler on it so im having a hell of a time getting this thing to stab in there. Lol. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Much easier to put the trans on the motor outside the truck or stab the transmission in after the motor is in. :) Quote Link to comment
mcordero8
Looks like your already putting it in. It is up to you I did mine with a flat black from Eastwood. I think black is safe. It matches with everything, so if you want to paint your truck later on down the road a different color it will look good. I hope you get it to line up. Good luck! Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
Engine is in, bolted up, had a little more trouble getting the Torque converter bolts in, since i pushed the tq all the way in, it was spaced from the flexplate, had to wiggle my hand in there to get the bolts in. But now that its in, i started putting the hoses and radiator in, and i noticed that the radiator actually has ports plugged on the bottom for a trans cooler. BUT if i put hose barbs on them, the radiator wont bolt in due to the lower frame rail, id have to cut/notch it out. Enjoy the photos, i need to find a couple bolts to reattach the lateral link, and then add fluids. Still cant drive it since i still need to tag/insure it. 2 Quote Link to comment
izzo
Nice job on the motor. All that work. Curious why you didn't do the last few things and clean up the manifolds.. .Maybe have them ceramic coated (at least the exhaust manifold) and then clean up the rusty emissions block off Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
Budget didn't allow it at this point in time. They will soon. But for now I just wanna drive it lol. 1 Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
got it all together fired up ran for a minute, shut it off, started it back up ran for 30 seconds lost all compression now it wont crank over... wonderful. Quote Link to comment
cr83
did it have oil pressure? Quote Link to comment
Scoobs
Had great oil pressure, 55-60, i think it may have jumped time or somthing. Quote Link to comment
