Not sure if there is a set year for them but I think the later models had no rings earlier ones did?

 

But I can answer you other question.  All grills are interchangeable.  I have both style grills.

'72-'77 had the trim rings. Unfortunately they are easily lost and so are hard to find.

'78 and '79 did not have the rings.

 

The later grill is more robust and harder to damage but it is sorely lacking in appeal and good looks. One of the first things I changed on my '78 was to an earlier grill. Yes they are totally interchangeable.

Yeah I noticed how the older model grills are very sturdy and the early model ones are flimsy.  The two early model ones had some cracks so I fixed the best one of the two.  

 

Also on the beauty rings..  they are not the same.  Each ring is molded just for that trim.  So what I am saying is there are 4 different rings (such as left outer, left inner, right inner, right outer)

Amen, it can take some luck to find rings that fit your grille/ring.
