76 Datsun 620- Jcooper

Some of you may know me from my 1972 Datsun 521 Resurrection build, and noticed that I picked up another Dat. So like promised, here is the new thread.

The newly acquired 620 came into being from random Craigslist searches whilst working on the 521. Typically my buddies and I would tinker away on the 521- analyzing gasket leaks and whatnot, get a little frustrated, drink a beer..get back to the datsun..and then spend the last few hours of the night searching craigslist ads in surrounding states because Datsun searches in South Dakota only bring up 280z's. So one day, I came across an ad that stated, "Datsun pickup: $300." located in Livingston MT. I called the guy up the next day to get some information on the truck. And the following is what was mentioned in its history and 'what was done to it'.

  • This truck was known to a few residing in the town of Livingston as the 'Constant Project truck.' Original owner sold it to a guy, who sold it to a guy...who sold it to a guy.
  • In the project passing phase the truck had a 5speed swapped into it.
  • Exhaust was done- sounds like a glasspack.
  • Interior had some interesting swaps. Some may have seen my classified ad looking for an original 620 dash with original wiring. This is due impart to the 521 dash swap that currently resides in it. Wiring was a mess (kinda figured most parts out.)
  • Interesting initial paintjob, (I would have kept the paint as the PO, however it was chipping, and the hood just didn't do it for me.)
  • Spot light installed. And a rotating work light in the back- this was removed..if you want it I can sell it cheap,

The reason why the guy was selling so cheap was simply this: "It ran before I stored it for the winter..come spring it wouldn't fire up." This was fixed simply by cleaning the carb with carb cleaner. When she did crank over and fire up....it was glorious. Below are the pictures. Enjoy and please comment.

Discussing the random parts that the guy had. He also gave me a 280z motor, which is tore down and labeled. (if anyone interested in 280z parts..please let me know, I have no use for it.)

Some pictures of minor body work to the hood, bed sides, tailgate, cab. Also pictures of the wiring harness I spent 3 hours wrapping back up and finding out all connections. I now have brake lights..which pleases me, and some shots of the 521 dash in the 620 cab. Like I said earlier...looking for an original 620 dash, but this 521 dash will have to do for now.

Below you see the 521 dash installed from previous owner. It's not a bad idea, but the sides of the dash have some fairly large gaps. Also, the steering column bracket was cut to fit everything up.    like I said, brake lights were figured out.

Each side of the dash- larger gap on driver's side. Have yet to determine how to make it fit a little better for the time being

Here's a quick pic mikeanike99. They look separate but a steel pin was placed to bring them together <--per previous owner. I did take it off to inspect it's strength and figured it would be fine. sometimes It bottoms out...only sometimes.. but I haven't had problems.

At first I was a little taken aback by the 521 dash, only due to the wiring job I had to figure out. However, It's growing on me just because it is simple and does the job. I could adjust a little to make one side fit a redbull can haha.
