datson4life
Those are the noises that started after my transmission swap, i have a 1972 521, the original transmission got stuck in 3rd and never came out, so i swapped it out and fit a 710 4 spd, the only difference is that the 710 didnt have the thread for the bolt that holds down the driveline shaft piece that slides in the tranny, ppl are telling me my diff is making those noises but i believe its the new tranny cause noise started right after swap. Ideas? Its noisy tranny but all gears are good Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Sounds like a bad transmission. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You did plug the hole in the end of the spline, right? A 40mm engine core plug (aka frost plug) will fit with some sealer to keep the transmission oil in. Transmissions don't 'ping'. That sound is the hollow drive shaft pipe ringing. Inspect and replace the dry U joints. 1 Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
the hole in the end of the spline. Since you didn't change the driveshaft, it seems unlikely that's it. Although a sharp ping is usually the driveshaft. Quote Link to comment
datson4life
Doesnt make sense, it didnt make that noise with previous tranny, im still confused about what hole needed to get plugged Quote Link to comment
datson4life
And yes datzenmike, it sounds like hitting a hollow driveline with a wrench when going into gears, other than that it shifts smooth and drives soft Quote Link to comment
