did i buy wrong ignition coil

Dats Right

Recommended Posts

69' 521 with j15, a little while back while ordering a bunch of parts from rockauto i purchased a standard(803) ignition coil that says " use with external resistor", from reading through old threads ive found, that the external resistor is necessary when using a points distributor which i am,

the current ignition coil does seem to work fine, but looks pretty weathered so i figured i throw a new one in. The coil on the truck does not have an external resistor. so here i am with the wrong coil, should i put it in and add a resistor, or buy one one that does not call for one, or just leave the old one in, and is "standard" a decent product? Thanks

I noticed on the J motor 520/521s there was no resisitor. In dought put the orginal back in. They usuallly dont go bad.

the 520 i worlked on had no resistor and no hot start wire.  previos owner put a MSD Blaster in there and I put a 510 coil and a ballast in there in series and it seem to work fine.

but if your points burn up fast then youll know

dont be changing shit just to change it

alright, yeah i got carried away ordering parts on rockauto when i saw how much cheaper they were than what my parts store was chargin me, seeing as the engine is a swap, wasnt sure what proper way  to set it up was, the coil in there has the main spark wire, and two small gauge, thought 521 usually had resistor but i dont see a mounting spot for it. but yeah it does work now, recently replaced points, condenser, rotor, dizz cap, and helped a lot, thought couldnt hurt to change coil but i guess if it aint broke.......
