'71 510 wagon Shifter/linkage help needed

Recommended Posts

Hey, everyone. I'm new to this forum so forgive any formatting mistakes I may make.

Anyways, I was looking for some expertise. My shifter has had a nut fall out of the bottom, taking one bushing and some washers with it. So, as you can imagine, my shifter is sloppy as all hell. I have been driving it for about 2 months now. This has really grinded on the threads on the bottom of the shift lever itself. I looked online for parts. I managed to find bushings, but by that time, my shifter had been grinding against the socket and now the threads are too far gone to even put anything on it. I don't think I can chase the threads its so bad. I have searched and searched for a new lever and haven't found a single one that will fit my car. I have some pics of the lever, the linkage, and the parts that were on the shifter. There is one part that sits on top of the bushing that has a notch that fits into a key in the linkage. It looks to be completely worn out. I have no idea what its called so I haven't been able to search for it. I was hoping you guys could help me out. It would be GREATLY appreciated.

Here are some pictures I have taken:

One of the washers should have a rectangular hole that fits the flat sides of the shifter base. Also it should have a tap on the outer edge that fits in the notch. (below) This prevents the shifter from rotating.

The rubber part is I believe tapered and it takes two, an upper and lower one. When the nut is tightened the washers compress the rubber and hold the shifter in place.

You are not going to find these parts in a store. The bottom rubber could be turned in a lathe and even made out of aluminum or wood. The top washer could be larger and have the outer diameter ground down leaving a small tab on the outside but be small enough to fit down in the larger hole above the rubber. The inner hole on the washer could be Dremeled out square to fit the flat sides of the shifter

Missing metal won't stop a metric nut from working if you run a metric tap over it first

This is totally fixable. Meanwhile place a want ad in our classifieds section http://community.ratsun.net/classifieds/category/5-drivetrain/?sort_key=date_added&sort_order=desc asking for a PL 510  shifter complete with rubbers and washers. I believe the 610/710 and the A10 (HL510) also use the same shifter and components.

The F4W63's A type shifter that you have is also known as the 'Monkey Motion' shifter. A well earned name even when they aren't all worn out.

You should be able to find a top and bottom rubber  with metal washer and probably a shifter to go with it pretty easy if you put up an ad to buy.  As quite a few of these are kicking around peoples garages that switched to 5 speeds.. 521 trucks came with that shifter also.

P.S. make them sell it to you cheap as they know they can't use the dang thing.. :D
