620connor
Hey guys, is there a way to change the oil in the steering gear box in my 74 620? Ive noticed its seeped a lot out and it looks pretty dark. I doubt it has ever been changed. Thanks. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If leaking out the bottom the seal is gone and needs replacing. There is no recommended interval for replacing the gear oil. Just to check it. It takes GL-4 oil same as your standard transmission. Quote Link to comment
620connor
How do i check the oil in it? Do i need to remove the metal plate on top? Quote Link to comment
TENDRIL
Do not remove the metal plate. It will be a pain in the ass to get back together. Pretty much the bottom seal need be replaced , and top it off till it almost spills out Quote Link to comment
620connor
How do i top it off with oil once i get it back together? Is there a fill hole? And is the seal hard to replace? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
There is an oil filler plug on the top. Clean it off and you'll see it. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I think you could change the seal with it in the truck. The pitman arm bolt has to come off then draw the pitman arm off with a puller. Often there is a large C clip (use snap ring pliers) with a washer above that and then the seal. Tell the truth I've done the 620 box but can't remember for sure. Done a Ford Bronco, 280zx and a D21 Hardbody that were power steering. I removed the bolts on the top of the box and lifted the sector shaft up and out of the way, then pried the seal out. You might also drive a long screw up into the seal and pull it out with pliers just like an engine rear seal without removing the sector shaft. Grease the replacement seal and drift into place with a suitable size socket and replace the washer and C clip or snap ring. (whatever it's called) The pitman arm nut is tightened to 100 ft lbs. Don't worry about the spline lining up. It's made in such a way that it can only go on in four 90 degree positions and you won't be that far out. Quote Link to comment
