Extractor broke off in oil pickup bolt HELP

Recommended Posts

Ok so one of the twins ended up tightening the shit out of one of the oil pick up bolts and snaped it off, then the extractor broke off in the bolt when trying to get the broke bolt out.

I have not been able to penatrate the hardened steel of the extractor, it laughs at my drill bits, Ive tried using a punch to start it turning out, but nothing...any ideas, or alternatives, suggestions...jokes..?

I have done this a couple times myself. After weaving a tapestry of profanity over the situation, I break out the welder. In one instance, I blew it out with a plasma cutter, but I think I got lucky by not boogering it up, so maybe don't try that one.

Well, couldnt wait for my cousin to get home to use his TIG, so ...heat, punches, drill...repeat...and then casting broke off....ahhh F&*@ MY ASS...was able to recover by using a 1/4 inch bolt washers nylon nut lock tight, the one good bolt seemed like it would do fine, but didnt want to take any chances of sucking air. Soooo as embarassed and ghetto as it sounds it will be fine for what the function is. If not then I will learn something from this....Dont let your son tighten a 12mm bolt with a 3/4 drive.....my fault for assuming I guess...ahhhhh

post pics of the carnage. we might be able to help you fix it and if not at least laugh at you.  no seriously though there are a lot of machinists and stuff on here and there might be a way to fix it.

WOW...way to put me on the spot, a freakin laugh it would be trust me....the whole side of the curved portion is blown out, its like a half circle with threads. Im assuming to through trying to get what I need to weld cast, Id be better off just starting with another block...which is not in the cards at this time. Im fairly confident...lol... the through bolt + the other good side will work for what the function of the oil pick up is...the elements are gong to be vibration and heat, not really any sheer stress.

But if I grow a set over the weekend...Ill take a picture....and you guys can point and laugh....Im thick skinned...

You can just tig a nut where the casting broke. Would be much better then just leaving one bolt. I would be concerned with sucking air but also the constant vibration, heat/cold etc... loosening the one bolt up over time.

exactly my concern. ever try to drink from a straw that has a hole in it? you dont want that happening with your oil.

Oh I agree, but there ARE two bolts in the stock locations for sure....one just happens to be a through bolt with a nylon nut and lock tite on the back side, the other side is stock and not broke...YET...I wouldnt run with just one by any means. Had to use a through, or decided I should say use a through bolt on the side that blew out or cracked off, during the attempt of removing said extractor. Everyhting is very secure and should function as normal.....just a bit ghetto...

Depending on how anal-retentive you are, you can use the right stuff as the gasket material and tighten down the one bolt.  After that shit cures, it's not going anywhere.  I'd want to fix it right, but if it's just a ho-hum motor or you need to get it running, it would work.

I was about to say... HOLY HELL! Nine freaking days later and you still haven't fixed it? Damn, talk about procrastinating! :P

Then again I did drive around for three months with a squealing belt on my Datsun before I finally gave up and tightened it!
