Clark_240z
Hey i just have a question about the t-5 transmission being put on a l24. Will it bolt right up to the motor or do i need a different bell housing? If i do need a different bell housing what do i use? Do i use a 280zx one? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If from an '81-'83 280zx turbo it will bolt right on. But seriously get the lighter slimmer FS5W71B 5 speed from the non turbo. The T-5 is a boat anchor and not to be confused with the World Class T-5s in the Camaro and 5.0 Mustangs. They aren't that strong. They also have poor ratios for a non turbo car and are considered a wide ratio trans with a 3.50 first compared to the available 3.062 first on the 290zx (non turbo) close ratio box. FS5W71B on left and FS5R90A. (T-5) You probably will have to massage the tunnel to get this thing in. Also you will need the drive shaft spline from the turbo car as your 240 one won't match it but will match the 71B. Likely the d/shaft will need shortening with both. Quote Link to comment

The t5 in the cameros were not world class and was far weaker than the zxt and mustang . the t5 from a zxt and an 80s mustang are nearly identical the only difference is in the input shaft and ratios of coarse, but the gearsets can be swapped if using a mustang clutch disk making it ideal cause of the availability of gearsets. Keep in ming the output shaft of the ZXT t5 is not the same as the non turbo as they ratained the same output shaft as the 'stang. A turbo 2 seat driveshaft will work in a 280Z 2 seat with the T5 if a R200 has been swapped in or the flange redrilled. Quote Link to comment
Driftease
Sorry forgot to mention the bell housings are different too from zxt and 'stang (just for clarification) but the bell housing flange on the gearbox is identical. Quote Link to comment

Just FYI the Camaro did come with a world class T-5, at least when they switched to the 3800 series II. Quote Link to comment
Dime Dave
The easiest way to identify them is by the countershaft bearing cap. The World Class has lettering around the outer edge, the non-world class is bare. World Class Non World Class Here is a link explaining WC vs non. http://lugnutz65chevystepside.weebly.com/world-class-and-non-world-class-versions-of-the-t5---how-to-tell-them-apart.html Quote Link to comment
Driftease
Good to know, I have only had one gearbox out of a camero and it was weak, no gussets on the outside of the case super thin bellhousing but I suppose that is correct due to it having less horsepower than the turbo zx in 83 anyways. Dime Dave
The Ford T5 bolts up to the 280ZX Turbo bell housing with some slight modifications. The ID of the bell housing bore needs to be enlarged or the OD of the T5's front bearing cover reduced. The bolt pattern is the same. The later 3.8L Camaro V6 also uses the same bell housing bolt pattern. Quote Link to comment
