Justin Tawney
hi, I have asked a few questions on here about my l16 engine never really introduced my self. so a few months back I bought a 1970 521 for 700 bucks on craigslist carb needed rebuilt didn't know much about cars I went for it anyways to find out the timing wasn't even set right at all. now I know quite a bit but still haven't got my l16 running completely back fires and spits out the carb. but I just got my hands on a ka24e im thinking of swapping it in there. I know you need new motor mounts and the oil pan doesn't fit any other help would be appreciated thank you. and I will have pics up tomorrow if I am not busy. Quote Link to comment
uberkevin
Sounds like you may just have a dizzy problem. Do you have a stock dizzy? As for the ka. Just keep reading man there is a ton of info on here. If you google anything with 'ratsun' at the end you should find it here. Get the 16 running like it should . Run in! Its fun. Also if you havent got a manual for the tuck getting one will help a lot. Oics too.. we all love them 1 Quote Link to comment
Z chopper
there are a few ka24de 521s popping up on here, if the motor mounts between the ka24e and the ka24de are the same it will be just about a direct swap with stock ka24e motor mounts. Here is a ka24de in a 521 with stock ka24de motor mounts 1 Quote Link to comment
datson4life
It should be the same, 240 guys go from e to de with no mount issues, my de fit on my 521 with just a 3/4 inch spacer between truck engine mount and frame on passenger side Quote Link to comment
socaldatsun
I jut got done with my ka-e swap into a 521. The stol motor mount won't work because it will set the motor too far front with no room for a radiator, you actually have to do a offset motor mount to push the motor back about 2 inches. I think some one on here made motor mounts for sale on 620 and yet will work on our trucks. As far as oil pans I use the front sump and convert to heim joints with a spacer on the center link. You can modify the tranny crossmember by cutting and welding into it to fit the 240 5soeed but I remombent getting a bolt on one cause when it comes to drop the tranny it's a bitch. I learned the hard way. Good luck on this man and check out my thread and feel free to ask anything 1 Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
alright I am pulling the l16 trying to leave the tranny on right now. its just hanging on the cherry picker right now. how do I disconnect the tranny from the engine? Quote Link to comment

Justin Tawney
will the stock l16 radiator fit and hold up? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I think you should have just figure out what was wrong with the back fireing with the L16. Which is like timming off or a wrong coil installed ,most likely something simple.Carb? If you couldnt figure this out. then doing a KA is a whole other world. and with 48 post have you done alot or reading in the How to section on KA/SR swaps? Looks like this truck will not see the road for a long time. how do I disconnect the tranny from the engine?????????????? this pretty much comfirmed my anwser But keep us posted. I like the power of a KA but I dont want to spend 3k on a upgrade on the car/truck & still worth the same 1 Quote Link to comment

Justin Tawney
im gonna rebuild the l16 when I get more money. and I wasn't sure if there was something I had to do to get the tranny off or not. im sorry im still learning. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Why rebuild the L16??? You still don't know what's wrong with it but it sounds to me like a basic spark timing issue. Quite common and easy to fix. Quote Link to comment
Z chopper
timing, carb, spark plugs and coil should be checked first Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
if theis rig is new to you always ck the mechanical timming. cam timming. then elelctrical timming. then the electric set up you have. then at same time ck the carb. for squirting of gas when the pedal is pushed. Most stock Hitachis are worn out by now. jcould be a plugged fuel filter at high rpms?????? chain off a link or dixxy off a tooth. bad spark plug wire? Even if a motor needs rebuild it could still run fine just be Smokey. maybe do a compression ck. or set the valave lash. To Mr JeffHino(icehouse a KA swap is EZ) but to others its best to have alot of friends with resources, garage, tool ect. Lacking just one pretty much tells the end result. Im not trying to be a Dick but I went thru all this when I was new and now trying to keep Datsuns on the road for as cheap as possible. The 521/510 are the simplest of the L series to work on as they have less emissions(more room to work) than the later cramped L20s Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
ive just put so much money and time in to the l16 and then the ka magically appeared and seemed like it was meant to happen so I went for it. haven't got the engine here yet though. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
A worn distributor and even bad condensor can make a eninge pop. Have the KA in the garage is the Ezist thing to do. getting the KA running installed is another. Get Jeff Can /am box hight pressure fuel pump a btter radiator and new clutch set motor mounts. Get the right exhaust so you dont hit the torsion bars Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
I also have a garage I can work in a little welder that im trying to learn how to weld. and a bunch of tools! been laid off for a little while that's why I haven't done much at all because ive had no money. banzai510(hainz)
best to put the L16 back in after knowing this Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
okay so. I got 2 dizzys from a guy on here a double point and 1 single point the single point works good got new spark plugs and wires annddd I got a weber carb. got all hooked up. still nothing.. so I got an l20b with low compression for 20 bucks. gonna put a different head on that's from an l18 I believe. and rebuild the block this weekend. already found out the piston rings were bad and one valve was not sealing on the l20 head. so I hope I can get this one running. if not.. I guess I haven't learned enough on my own. Quote Link to comment
