About 1/3 way down...

Needed to clear up some space, so I ended up starting on the struts that are laying around here. I mainly need to get the springs off them, but I think I'll probably take the perches of too while I'm at it.

Don't expect this thread to get finished anytime soon. I'm putting this up for reference for now. Eventually, I'll finish the shortening. I originally planned on going with 210 springs cut down to 12", but coilover kits are so stinkin' cheap on ebay, I'll probably go with that. Yes....I have more struts than I can use at this point. At one time, I had 3 wagons here...now only two and the parts wgn will go away fairly soon.....I hope! Anyway......

..mmmmm...the holy grail of struts....the '87 200sx 5 lug. I have the rear rotors and calipers too. But, since I plan on running my snowflakes, I don't know if these will make on the wgn.

280zx. The most commonly used strut.

210 struts. Got these simply to use the perches and springs. Not sure I will now. The ones on the left are rear 510 sedan??? I think. No clue. They're either of a 300zx, 200sx or came with another pile of stuff I bought years ago.

300zx struts. No use for them. The hubs rotors will fit the 200sx stuff, but the angles are way off to try to use on a 510. So...they make good practice fodder.

Gotta have the 5 lug spare if you're gonna do the swap.

The rest of these are of the 300zx strut on the lathe. Pretty much self explanatory.

You have 71 610 in your profile. You must mean a 510?

510s had a 2? different strut types, both quite long.

All 510, 610, 710, A10 (hl510) s10 AND s110 (200SX) 280zx and 810/Maxima have the same 10 degree spindle angle, well, up to the 300sx anyway.

The 510 struts (and I think the very early 610s) have smaller wheel bearings so later hubs won't fit, or 510 hubs won't fit later struts. The 510 spindle nut is also smaller.

Most 510,610,710,A10,S10,S110 front coils are small diameter. 280zx and Maxima coils, top hats and bottom spring perches are much larger diameter and will not fit up into the strut towers of these other cars. The bottom perches can be cut off the zx struts and smaller ones attached. All strut tubes are 2" diameter.

Most strut tubes are slightly smaller length that the 510 with the 280zx and Maximas being the shortest for lowering the ride height. Well over one inch shorter.

If you see any errors in this please correct me.

That all sounds right to me. Thanks Mike.

And my profile seems to be a typo (fixed). I have a '72 610. Not a '71. I have honestly never laid my hands on a 510.

The calipers and rotors are boss. maybe can use them on something?

Maybe. I'm not totally sure at the moment.

s12 200sx struts will bolt up, but the cups are larger so you lose the sheer value of the cup/boss interface to the steering knuckle.  So, you can get a washer like spacer, or roll center adjust spacers as posted above ^^^ with the correct size boss to fit the 200sx strut.  The 200sx struts will take a higher offset wheel than the 280zx strut, but have slightly smaller vented rotors than 280zx.  s12 200sx struts can be found in 4 lug or 5 lug with the V6 SE 200sx.  The 5 lug struts can fit the larger 300zx calipers and there are different mix & match hub setups you could mess with to convert the 5 lug struts to 4 lug hubs.

300zx rotor has the same offset and bolt pattern as a 280ZX rotor... this is only really helpful though if you're using a bracket to move the caliper since the Z31 had an 11" rotor.

Also helpful if you want to run an aftermarket caliper but want a little more beef than the standard 280zx brake.

Hey Matt... If the strut to spindle angles are all the same and the S12 strut takes a higher off set wheel than a zx strut then this must be a function of hub wheel mounting surface differences, right?

Yeah, the hub has the wms farther away from the strut, very similar to the 300zx hub.  Like the picture you posted above, the 300zx and 200sx hub has the wms closer to the outside bearing, instead of that huge bearing volcano on the 280zx hub.

The 200sx 5 lug strut also has a wider caliper bolt spacing, which is important for running the 4 piston bigger calipers

1985 300zx accept a +20 front rim like stock struts , I believe you must also take from 300 lower balljoint/steer arm from donor car ,300zx is 4" across lower mount and all others are 3 and 1/8 across or a guy in So Cal makes an offset bump steer spacer for this bigger pattern .[url=http://s1183.photobucket.com/user/Alleycatgarage/media/104_2081.jpg.html]104_2081.jpg

Do you happen to have a link to that thread?

I've fitted s12 struts onto my 810, the issues i've had are:

Must use a spacer to make up for the difference. Mine were 54mm OD 40mm ID and 15mm thick

You get a bit of extra positive camber due to the steering arm bolts being offset to the strut tube:

top one is s12 bolt hole is approx 1/4" further out than centre line of strut tube

bottom one 810 standard strut bolt hole aligned with centre of strut tube,

If you go low you should have enough play to sort that out with adjustable top plates.

  • 2 years later...

So I was checking out the 300zx struts and noticed everything seems to be exactly the same as a 510/280zx strut except two things. The bolt pattern and the hub is shifted back 1". Which in my mind will make it return to center faster and make it more stable on the freeway. So no one has ever tried a set on their 510?

How cool would it be to run 6 degrees of caster but have your wheel centered in the wheel arch.

I believe the m30 Infinity is also the same offset 20-25 with removable rotors I have a set and have installed a set of 1984 300zx struts here also and they have same bolt pattern and what does front mounted caliper do ,if anything ,downward force at tire ? You may be able to run +25 front and rear on a 510 ,fit 215s
