Just Joel
Alright Ratsun... started sanding my new to me MkIII's today for a re polish and discovered this... No problem, I'll just take some stripper to em... nope, nothing I can buy can touch this shit... so I'm beginning to question what I'm looking at here. Does this look like a clear coat or just oxidation/scale from the original polish? Thanks Joel Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Oh, it's tuff to cut through! I can feel the moment I break through and start sanding aluminum. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Looks more like paint to me, maybe powder coated? Leave some lacquer thinner sitting on a spot and see if it softens. Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Not paint, it's obviously over a polished surface... Quote Link to comment
Dattokai
Uhh.. enough with clear coat and paint talk. Let's see the wheels. Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
lol... Should have saw that one coming ;) Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
A good example why it's not paint 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Gray anodizing? 2 Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Don't think so but maybe? Be surprised if it was though. Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
As you can see the finish is hazy like there was a cheap clear over a mirror polish. Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
So back to the 320 grit for me? My rotator cuff is going to hate me for this :p Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
When I first had trouble removing the surface I thought maybe powder coat but it sure doesn't feel like they are coated. Plus I've been able to scratch clear powder and this surface feels much harder. Quote Link to comment
carterb
Those are going to look sweet Joel! What size and offset? --carter Quote Link to comment
kevins750
Coming from the vintage Japanese bike world, I can tell you they quite often "cleared" aluminum parts...We use Aircraft stripper or Oven cleaner and let it set until it starts bubbling( and not a minute longer, as it will start to grey aluminum) Quote Link to comment
john510
I would say anodized. 1 Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Alright, I'm starting to think these are anodized! I've never heard of this... is it common to anodize barrels in Japan? After about three hours of 220 grit dry I'm around half of one rim... Guess some things are earned not bought ;) Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Those are going to look sweet Joel! What size and offset? --carter Thanks Carter... The rears are 15x7.5 +6 and the fronts (when they show up in a month or so) are 15x7 +6 The fit is perfect for my wagon :) Any thoughts on color for the centers? I was thinking sticking with silver... Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
Could they be places where they were repaired? Looks kinda like spots I've seen on rims that have been welded on to fix gouges. Sweet wheels, by the way. I love MkIII's. 1 Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
The coating is consistent all the way around the wheel but that thought did cross my mind... Quote Link to comment
carterb
Any thoughts on color for the centers? I was thinking sticking with silver... My Jilba Racing wheels are very similar to the MKIII's and I like mine in silver. I'm not a fan of the traditional gold centers on JDM wheels but they do look correct I s'pose. I'm really NOT a fan of body colored wheels so just don't paint them red. 1 Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
looks anodized to me I have some old works that look like that 1 Quote Link to comment

Not on a red car though. Silver it is! Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Alright, five hours later the Ano is off of ONE wheel... and a short three hours later and seven grits of paper its ready for the polishing wheel... guna need to let the finger nails recover before I get on the second one. Hopefully the second set aren't like this. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Anodizing increases the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the aluminum surface. It increases corrosion and wear resistance (among other things) and this may explain why it was so difficult to remove. Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Indeed, and I'm sure it served it's purpose in their last service life in salty Japan ;) here on my high desert non daily Datsun it shouldn't be necessary. Side note, why does the spell check flag the word "Datsun"? Quote Link to comment
